Freestailo #45 - 8/31/12

I wish there was a Pokemon anatomy book.
Good morning!

I had an interesting show this morning, and one that kept me on my toes. I had a large variety, as usual, but more so since I used my VERY FIRST reggae vinyl today! I might have at some point accidentally played some reggae, or something very genre-crossing, but I usually don't pick anything from reggae for reasons unknown to me. I liked very much the one I picked though, so I should probably explore that section more.

Regarding the layering, I wanted to say that I felt really good about it today. Sometimes I get in ruts when it comes to layering things, but I think I had a really great groove with the one today. I had a good grasp of what materials I was working with, and how to create a full radio piece with them. It was a much more analytical process today than it usually is when I layer. Often times when I layer, I either am running around the station looking frantically for something that I need, or I have set everything up to go at the same time, which has its virtues and faults. Today though, because of the slow pace and build of the layer, I was able to play one song, then add another, and had the time to mentally process whether it was working or not, and had the time to switch songs if I needed to. I felt very much in control, which is a pleasant feeling, I think. Haha.

Anyway, let's get to it.

Yes:
  1. Koji Asano Layering: I've used Asano-san's music before for layering, and I've never been disappointed. I really like the ambiance he creates, and especially the gradual build to it.
  2. Pokemon: This should always happen. Using these sounds makes me think that I should use more small sound interludes in general, whether they are Pokemon or not...but they should preferably be Pokemon.
  3. Powerpuff Girls: This is pure aural gold. Hip-hop style remixes of the Powerpuff Girls? Yes, please. Always, please. The best part is that I thought it was just going to be straight-up music from the show, but it turned out to be remixes coupled with quotes and sound effects.
No:
  1. Speaking was ehhh: I was pretty close to the mic, wasn't I? It sounded a little distorted to me, so sorry about that. It sounded good in my ear, but that's good to know that it was too much.
  2. Request awkwardness: With no fault to the wonderful person who requested Steve Miller, I wasn't expecting to get a request, and I was just about to put on a long layering, but knew that I couldn't wait until after the layer.
  3. Pauses: There was more dead air than I normally like to have, and it was purely because I wasn't paying attention. I usually have a really good sense of when songs end, but today I was just zoning out a lot. At one point I think I was standing in the FM studio, looking at the computer, and realized I had nothing cued up for what I needed to play in 30-seconds. *headdesk*
Well, hope you enjoyed the show, and I'll see you next Friday! And if you can't get enough of me, you should listen to my public affairs show

Dead White Guys #3 - 7/15/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Dead White Guys #3 Here

Although I didn't play a lot of tracks for this show, I had a lot of fun with what I played. I retrospectively played a lot of vocal music, but I never apologize for that, and I can only hope that you enjoy it. I don't think there was a boring moment for me, and it felt really good to play the full set of 'Das Buch der Hängende Gärten', as well as the entire 'Also Sprach Zarathustra'.

I think I had a really good mix today, and I'm glad that I allowed myself to play longer tracks, which is kind of a self-experiment that I've been trying lately, like with the latest Sounds of the Subcontinent episode I did. I also have been thinking a lot about the way that I actually play the music. It's a hotly debated topic amongst DJs about whether we should talk over music, or whether we shouldn't. There's no wrong way to do it, but DJs can be passionate about what they think is a good way to do it. Personally, as you can hear, I like to speak over music. I think it adds something to the way that I speak, and just feel more comfortable having something underneath me, and makes it sonically more interesting. That said though, I often get very uncomfortable speaking over classical music on a classical show, because I've heard from some listeners that they REALLY hate when I talk over music that they might want to experience as a whole, from start to finish. I can completely understand that, but it is definitely a different way of doing radio than I'm used to.

What do you think? Do you mind when a DJ talks over music? I want to know!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Pierre Charial: Capriccio No. 1 - György Ligeti: Mechanical Music
  2. London Philharmonic Orchestra: Cantus - 'Song of the Odyssey' - Karl Jenkins: Adiemus 2 Cantata Mundi
  3. Emanuel Ax: Variations on "Là ci darem la mano," Op. 2 for Piano and Orchestra (Largo) - Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, etc.
  4. London Chamber Singers & Chamber Orchestra: The Indian Queen Acts III, IV, & V - Purcell: The Indian Queen
  5. Angela Hewitt: La Verneüille (from Dix-huitième Ordre) - Couperin: Le Grand
  6. Jennifer Lane: Das Buch der Hängende Gärten (complete) - Schoenberg: Das Buch der Hängende Gärten
  7. L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande: La Valse - Ravel: Ravel's Head
  8. Staatsoper Berlin Chorus and Orchestra: Overture & Act I, Scene 1 - Wagner: Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman)
  9. L'ensemble Diabolus in Musica: Introït, Kyrie, and Gloria - Dufay: Missa se la face ay pale
  10. Vienna Philharmonic: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
Angelus:
  1. Schoenberg: I could definitely listen to this all day, and I have no idea way. I really like atonal music, and the Sprechstimme (unpitched speak-sing thing) is so interesting to me as a performer, as well as a listener. I really, really hope you enjoyed this set. I also encourage you to check out the translations/text for it!
  2. Strauss: I never get sick of Strauss, and I hadn't heard this piece before. I didn't realize how epic this was, or that this was where that theme that's right at the beginning came from that sometimes you'll hear in commercials/movies I think.
Diabolus:
  1. I wasn't really unhappy with anything, to be honest. I thought this was a great show. Maybe sometimes I'm awkward on the mic, but that's about it!
Enjoy!

Radiozilla #4 - 7/15/12

Le Polysics
Did you know that I really like DJing Radiozilla? I do. It's only an hour, and I still have to read concert information right in the middle of it, but it's really fun. Having the freedom to play all Japanese music for you is something that I wouldn't allow myself on my freeform show, so sometimes I wonder if it still sounds like me, you know? Does it sound like MY radio? I would love to hear what you think about it.

Also, I've come to realize that I play a song by Polysics every single Radiozilla. I also play it on my freeform show. And you know, I think I realized that I'm kind of obsessed with them. Sometimes I can't listen to an entire album in one sitting, but they are the perfect mix for freeform-style radio. Thank you for existing, Polysics.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Polysics: Married To A Frenchman - Hey! Bob! My Friend!
  2. Asobi Seksu: Coming Up - Fluorescence
  3. Koenjihyakkei: Guoth Dahha - Viva Koenji!!
  4. Oorutaichi: (track 11) - Jurasy Human
  5. Matally: Four Seasons VS YoYo-C - Japan For Sale Vol. 3
  6. Thee Machine Gun Elephant: Citroën No Kodoku (The Loneliness of Citroën) - Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter
  7. Joe Hisaishi: Kaonashi (No Face) - Spirited Away OST
  8. Ken Ishii: Iceblink (main mix) - Japan For Sale Vol. 2
  9. The Pillows: Tiny Boat - The Pillows Acoustic
  10. Tokyo Jihen: FAIR - 2012???
  11. Takemoto Akira: Island in Video Casset - Serial Experiments Lain
  12. Gackt: Vanilla - Vanilla
FAIR:
  1. New Polysics album: Yay! More Polysics for you! This new album's really fun, and kind of more of the same style as other Polysics albums, so...it's perfect basically.
  2. Spirited Away: Mmmm I'm so glad I found this album in the soundtrack section. I love the music to this movie, and I wish that we had more Miyazaki movie OSTs in the library! Like My Neighbor Totoro? I would kill someone for that.
NO FAIR:
  1. Too much online music: In retrospect I realize that 3 out of the last 4 songs were from a computer online, which I don't normally do at such frequency, and especially for such a short show. I'll be more careful next time, although I really did want to play those artists for you.
Thanks for listening! Stay tuned for more updates!

Walalalalalala!

For me, this show was a lot more high energy in the start than I usually have, and there was a lot more balance throughout the set than I usually see. Despite a couple of herp-a-derp moments, I really enjoyed listening back on the show as well! Because I don't have a lot else to say, here's the video of the video conversation that you heard on the show. It's just as good visually.

  37. M. Ward: Me And My Shadow - A Wasteland Companion
  38. The Apples in Stereo: Sun is Out - New Magnetic Wonder
Turn it Up:
  1. Chet Baker: I could literally listen to his voice until the apocalypse comes. I think he has the most mesmerizing voice, and his trumpet playing is just as good. Mmmm. Makes me want to curl up in a blanket and read a book.
  2. Apples in Stereo: This was an awesome way to end the set. I'd never heard Apples in Stereo before this, so it was a real treat.
  3. The Avett Brothers: This song was a really nice balance to what was going on during that part of the set, and I really didn't expect something so sweet. I guess I haven't really listened to The Avett Brothers before.
Turn it Down:
  1. Russian Flub: Yeah I definitely didn't mean to play this at first...oh well. Kind of a let down but radio is pretty much never perfect. Hahaha.
  2. YouTube Clip: I'm not gonna say what went wrong with this, but you can probably guess.
  3. General awkwardness: I have no idea why there were weird pauses, and fast talking, and there was one point my voice was totally monotone.
Until next Friday!

Freestailo #40 - 6/4/12 - Happy 4th of July!

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Freestailo #40 Here

Oh, hello there.
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY, FRIENDS!

To celebrate our independence, and subsequently the independence of being able to put millions upon millions of cat pictures on the internet, throughout this post I'm going to give you lots of American themed cats, like this guy.

This 4th of July, I willfully let WCBN take my entire day from me, and I regret nothing. I woke up early and headed to the Canterbury house where we congregated before heading over to the Ann Arbor 4th of July Parade. "What would WCBN do in a parade?" you might ask. Well, we had a MARCHING BAND! Spreading music the only way we know how: freeform style. As a side note, if you happened to be there and have pictures, please feel free to contact us so we can see them!

After the parade, I met up with my roommates and headed to Starbucks for some free coffee, which I SO DID NOT NEED because I was still hyper from the parade, and continued to be while we got ice cream at Washtenaw Dairy, and THEN STILL once I got home and started to do research for the July 4th Sex & Tell special, which pretty much took me the rest of the day, while I stayed in the air-conditioning of my apartment.

I cannot tell you how much fun my time at the station was this day. Even though I messed up a few times, and there were some frustrating moments, there's something special about sharing music with everyone on a holiday that makes up for it. I've DJed on holidays before, and there's an energy that cannot be contained when the whole world/country/state/city is sharing something like a holiday with each other, and you get to create a living and breathing playlist for it.

This is a cat with a red and white star cello.
About the actual show, although I don't do this very often, I created a playlist beforehand to make sure that I had enough material, but allowed a bit of breathing room in the moment for flub-ups, requests, etc., which seemed to work out really well. I tried to make sure all of the songs were either American themed, or for certain parts I created a scheme of Red-->White-->Blue songs for a bit of literal color. The one thing that wasn't "American" was the V for Vendetta clip, but I think that this movie (and especially this clip) is relevant to all people, and all countries.

Anyway, I really hope you enjoy this playlist, and I hope that you all had a loving, drunken holiday.

  29. T.M. Revolution: WHITE BREATH -MORE FREEZE MIX- - triple joker
  30. Damo: Deep Blue - Seven
Good Things:
  1. Madama Butterfly: I absolutely love this opera, and I really love this segment of the opera because it is just RIFE with sarcasm and irony. Although the sound is patriotic, the content is a big vulgar, and makes a big statement about how the characters represent America.
  2. Andrews Sisters: I'm in love with this 45", and I'm glad I got to play the other side of it! Honestly, I could play an entire show of just this stuff. Mmmm.
  3. V for Vendetta clip: This is one of my top-5 favorite movies, and I think the ideas of empowering the people to change the government are powerful, and something that we should all take a good look at for our own government(s).
Bad Things:
  1. Wrong Animal Collective Song: I'm not even going to lie to you, I was really pissed when I played "In The Flowers" instead of "My Girls." This was one of the main songs I wanted to sing over the course of the show, and I messed it up. You don't even want the know the things I was screaming in the station.
  2. Not Beatles: Also another mistake RIGHT AFTER the Animal Collective mistake, which pissed me off even more. Let me be honest with you: I was positively livid. But things pass, radio keeps going. C'est la vie.
  3. Too much laptop: I thought that I knew where a lot of this music was in the station, but when I got there I couldn't find all of it, and ended up using my laptop for at least a third of the songs on this list. I don't like that, and I'm sorry. It's not fair to you or me or freeform radio.
Thanks for listening! Hope you had a great holiday. Stay locked in.

Latin Show #2 - 6/1/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Latin Show #2 Here

Is it possible I've only done one other Latin show besides this?! Apparently so. I will make up for that soon. Also, as a side note, my ex-roommate came to visit me at the station, and I'm pretty sure she had fun, so that's good too. Also, here are some pictures of Los Zafiros, because I said so.

I got nothin' else. TO THE PLAYLIST!

Bueno:
  1. Astor Piazzola: I never get tired of this man. He is a genius.
  2. Los Zafiros: I had NO IDEA that there was a doo-wop style group in Spanish! This has to be the best find for the day.
Male:
  1. My pronunciation: Sorry if I screwed anything up (I know I did). I don't speak Spanish, but I'm trying to get better at pronouncing it. Sometimes my knowledge of Italian gets in the way, so it probably sounds a little...weird is the only word.
Thanks for listening! Be back this Friday for my regular show!

Freestailo #34 - 5/18/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Freestailo #34 Here

How's it going, my freeform minions? I heard that you like listening to the radio...is that right? Well, you're pretty lucky, because I'm a DJ at WCBN. THAT'S SO COOL RIGHT?! I must be, like, the coolest person you know. Also, I'm really useful to you, because I have some information for you:

Did you know that the hot girl on all of the Messer Chups covers...

...is actually the leader singer/guitarist in the band?!

Anyway, this was a good show, and I have not too much to report about it, except that I'm really enjoying my 9-noon slot for the summer, and I hope that I can keep something like this during the coming year. I'm not really missing songs with curse words, and it's actually more of a challenge because I can't just grab ANYTHING. It also makes me realize how much of the library needs to have reviews for FCCs (curse words and generally inappropriate content).

All right, now stop being lazy and go listen to my show.

  36. New York Philharmonic and Leonard Berstein: I-IV - Holst: The Planets
Hail:
  1. Pierrot Lunaire Layer: Eeeeee I love scary layers! I've noticed something from my past layers, is that I find it easier to create a spooky, atmospheric layer, rather than a super exact one, but perhaps that's also the nature of doing live layering with the materials I have. Either way, my favorite part was when I played the Billie Holiday. Love that shit. So scary.
  2. Messer Chups: All of the reincarnations of the Messer Chups are absolutely brilliant. They're in the good-life section, and if you're a DJ at WCBN reading this, you should go look at it right now.
  3. Freestailo Remix: Ummmm this was baller. I should play more remixes of this, or make one.
Kill:
  1. YouTube: Why do I use YouTube? I hate myself every time I do, but sometimes I feel like it's so necessary. Oh the Internet.
  2. Manowar: I was really into this for a hot second, and I think I could be in the future, but for what I wanted at this moment, it felt a little...overdone, shall we say.
  3. When I forced my random ideas on you: Remember that time that I tried to create a cart for you live? That was kind of weird.
Update complete. Now go listen to more radio.

Subshow #16 - 5/9/12

Today was a bit of a strange show for me because one of my very good friends was in the studio with me, and immediately before subbing Saramin's show, I hosted the very first episode of the Sex and Tell Show, which is a public affairs show I'm doing this semester with a friend, so I was a little...crazed is the word.

Regardless, I think it was a good show, and I happened upon a few good songs! Hope you like it!

Movin' Down:
  1. Starting with long track: Tell me if I'm wrong, but that makes the set a little slow...right?
  2. Premature Song Playing: As I was at the station, my friend and I were also having dinner, and she went to my apartment to grab some Nutella for our bread, and I accidentally, and in a state of panic, played the song that she had picked out to hear. I'm still sorry about that.
  3. Thunder: Not as epic as I thought. Hm.
Until next time!

Horowitz: HEY GUYS! What's up?!
This is the first post of the summer term guys! As such, I decided to start off with a remix of my show's namesake. I'm really happy with this show, and I think it pretty much speaks for itself, and is a solid example of freeform as far as using various music selections.

I don't know if you know this, but there's a lot of thought that goes into what time slot a DJ wants. I happened to get my first choice, which is great, but just choosing what my first choice should be is a hard thing for me. Not only is there the dilema of sleep vs. availability, but the bigger issue for me is censorship. I might have mentioned this in another post, but the difference of how a show feels during "safe harbor" (when we can't play curse words), and non-safe harbor (between 10pm-6am), is pretty big for me. That also has to balance with the difference between having a show late at night, which will have less listeners, and a show in the morning, which will have more.

That all said, I'm ultimately really pleased with my spot, and it's really amazing what a new time slot can do for the morale and energy of a show. Each time my time slot has changed, it has taught me a little bit more about what kind of DJ I am.

All right, onto the list!

You are smart:
  1. Horowitz: Dear Lord, that man could play the piano.
  2. First chunk: The beginning of the show just felt absolutely amazing. I've never had a 9-noon show before, and the energy after eating breakfast and coming straight to the station is amazing. I'm more of a morning person, so that helps, but even so, I think that the first 30 minutes solid felt awesome.
  3. Pokemon: Always a good decision.
You are dumb:
  1. Talking over Tom: I'm sorry KMFR. I didn't mean to talk over Tom Waits. I really don't know what possessed me. Please forgive me.
  2. Less layering: I think it's fine when I layer less, but sometimes I think, "Someday when you can't do freeform radio anymore, you're going to kick yourself for not layering everything all the time.
  3. Shostokovich/Huun Huur Tu Layer: Usually I'm pretty satisfied with my layers, but...this time I'm not so sure. It was a bit...off.
See you soon for another back-update!

"I didn't know radio could sound like that!"
I had a couple of awesome guests on my show today: DJ Non-James, and my new friend Emily, who were lazing around the station around the time that I got locked out of my apartment and decided to come to the station early. Good thing I did, too, because they gave me a lot of inspiration for my show. It all started when James basically told me he was sabotaging my show. I didn't really know what that meant, but apparently it meant playing multiple vinyls of the same song at slightly different beats, and sometimes playing them backwards by propping them up with shot-glasses and ingenuity.

"Why now?" you might ask. When I was talking with Emily and James, he quoted Manager Ben (who was quoting me), and said, "We should start slapping our listeners in the face with WCBN!" So, we decided do try some crazy things. That's what freeform's about: experimenting. We can do anything at WCBN, and we should take advantage of it way more often. I could theoretically be using 3 vinyl, 3 CDs, 2 computers, 1 VHS, 1 DVD, 1 cassette, and 4 microphones worth of audio. And possible more that I don't know about. To me, that is absolute freedom. The only major rule is that you can't say curse words on air.

This is where I want to hear what you think, listeners. What kind of experimentation would you like to hear? What have been your favorite moments of my show?

[Artist: Song - Album]

  2. Selwyn Henry: Maturity - Mondo Soca
  3. Bio Ritmo: La Verdad - La Verdad

  7. Quentin Tarantino: Interview/"Stuck In The Middle With You" - Truth and Fiction
  8. Sarah Vaughn: Someone To Watch Over Me - The George Gershwin Songbook
  9. Dabrye: Prefuse 73 - Payback
  10. Tony Martin: Autumn Leaves (incorrect) - A Night At The Copacabana
  11. The Red Chord: Nihilist - Fused Together in Revolving Doors
  12. Radiohead: Life In A Glasshouse - Knives Out [Single #2]
  13. Holly Prado: How To Be Nervous/15 Morning Love Stories - Word Rituals
  14. Anonymous 4: Sequence: Stond wel, modder, under roode - The Lily & The Lamb
  15. Featuring Supercat, Jr. Cat, NIcodemus, Jr. Demus: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Crazy - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Crazy
  16. Ruth Wallis: Boobs - Boobs
  17. Yeti: La Java Blanche - Accordion Babes

  19. The Ukranians: Europa - Kultura
  20. Bayette: Thabo - Mmalo-We
  21. Andreas Vollendender: Caverna Magica - Caverna Magica
  22. Bobby Darin: Dream Lover - Darin at the Copa
  23. Radiohead: Lull - Lost Treasures
  24. Marvin Gaye: Got To Give It Up - Live At The London Palladium
  25. Phillip Glass: Freezing (x2) - Songs From Liquid Days
  26. Brook Benton: The Nearness of You - It's Just A Matter Of Time
  27. The Nighthawks: Sugar Mama - The Nighthawks
  28. The Free Design: An Elegy - Kid Koala & Dynomite D.
  29. Simone Dinnerstein: Aria - Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988
The Good/Crazy:
  1. Radiohead "Lost Treasures": I like to think I'm a Radiohead fan, and I couldn't believe there was an album I hadn't heard of, or that it was so good.
  2. Boobs: Ruth Wallis is a genius. I'm going to play this entire album on the show someday, because every track was pure WCBN gold. Thanks for the tip, Rev. Andrew!
  3. Phillip Glass x2: At this point in the show, James propped a record on a shot class, turned the needle upside down, and played the record backwards, and did the same to another record, but just an 8th-note or so off. It reminded me of when I played 3 different recordings of "Tuba miram" from Mozart's Requiem back to back.
The Bad/Ugly:
  1. Dead air: I know there was a moment of dead air. I don't know what happened, but the Macbook I was playing off of just kind of stopped in its tracks in the middle of the first Radiohead song. I pretended like I was playing 4'33" by John Cage. That was a lie.
  2. Quentin Tarantino Interview: That was a bit of a let-down. I was expecting some layering of the song with the interview, and what I got was 20-seconds of Tarantino, and then the song. Disappointing.
  3. Lackluster ending: I left the rest of it to James before the next DJ came, but my ending was a bit...eh...boring I guess. Not that classical music is boring, but I like to end with a bang.
Finally done with back-updates! Tune in next week!

Welcome to Freestailo Movie Night Teil Zwei!

"Dayum, gurl. WCBN is the shit."
I think this is the shortest playlist I've ever had, thanks to all of the SUPER long tracks on this list. I was really pleased with 'The Maltese Falcon' movie night, so I figured I'd repeat it with some kung-fu in the mix and see what would happen. It turns out this was pretty different from the show before, despite mostly the same formula. I think I could have done a little more with it, but I like where this train of experimentation is going, don't you? If not, let me know, and I still won't stop until the train has reached full-out crazy. Like this kid.

So anyway, I'm done talking. To the playlist!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Bruce Lee: Enter the Dragon - movie
  2. Various: Gending Bonang Babar Layar - Court Gamelan, Volume II
  3. Koji Asano: Spring Estuary IV - Spring Estuary
  4. Glenn Gould: Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I - The Well-Tempered Clavier
  5. Thomas Schultz: Walking, Walking - Hyo-Shin Ma: All The Noises
  6. COMA: Taciturnity Master - ornamental urban shrubbery
  7. The Cure: Burn - The Crow
  8. Sutekh: urchin - every dot and tittle
  9. Krishnamurthy: Djembe solo - Layopasana 2: Rhythmic Explorations
  10. Kylesa: Delusion on Fire - A 100 Heat Index EP
  11. Kiln: Isthmus - SMM Vol. 1
  12. Two Warriors: Standing Alone - Coova and little-scale
  13. Dexter Gordon & Slide Hampton: My Blues - A Day In Copenhagen
  14. Bootsy Collins: Sound Crack - Ultra Wave
The Well-Tempered Freestailo:
  1. Enter the Dragon: I don't think I really need to explain why this is awesome, but let me break it down for you: kung fu sounds, strange smooth soul music, heavy lines with heavy accents.
  2. Gamelan music: I really loved the gamelan music I found, and I think I'll pull from there in the future, since there seemed to be many volumes of gamelan music to choose from. It integrated well with the beginning of the movie, and then with the Koji Asano stuff.
  3. The Crow: I had a caller requesting/reminding of the existence of The Crow, and its weird connections to Bruce Lee's death and his son Brandon Lee's death. That went very smoothly with what I was playing, so thanks.
The Mis-Tempered Freestailo:
  1. When did the movie end?: Yeah I don't know either. I was not paying attention, and if I had been, I would have aurally zoomed in on the ending more.
  2. Little stability: I felt a bit unstable during this show, I think mostly because there weren't a lot of structured songs to follow throughout, and a lot of the movie was covered up by white noise from the avant-garde music.
  3. Needs energy: The energy was really placid during the whole show, which was kind of cool, but it needed more moments of high energy to balance out the strangeness.
We'll be all updated soon guys, so thanks for your patience.

Dead White Guys #2 - 3/25/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Dead White Guys #2 Here

Stephen Eddy as Shadow (L),
Jonas Hacker as Tom Rakewell (R)
It's been awhile since I've done the classical show, so it feels good to be back! Had Dead White Guys' founder, Peter Grella, here for this show, and I had a lot of fun chatting with him!

I meant to have this update up waaaay sooner, but c'est la vie de une studiente de musique. The majority of the show today was composed of "The Rake's Progress," which was put on by the University of Michigan as an official production. I went to the show twice--Saturday and Sunday, to see both casts--and I was really pleased with what I saw and heard.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Cleveland Orchestra: O Fortuna - Orff: Carmina Burana
  2. John Adams: American Berserk - Road Movies
  3. L.A. Phil: Petrushka pt. 1 - Stravinsky: Petrushka/Circus Polka
  4. John Adams: Short Ride in a Fast Machine - John Adams
  5. Stravinsky: Agon
  6. Stravinsky: Pucinella Overture - Rite of Spring/Pucinella
  7. Vienna State Opera: The Rake's Progress - Stravinsky
  8. The Buthershop Quartet: The Rite of Spring - The Rite of Spring
  9. Vladimir Horowitz: Faure: Nocturne No. 13, Op. 119 - The Horowitz Concerts 1977/1978
  10. Lou Harrison: Threnody for Carlos Chávez - Chamber and Gamelon Works
  11. Arthur Robinstein and Guarneri Quartet: Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34 - Dvorak Brahms Piano Quintets
  12. Henry Cowell: Three Anti-Modernist Songs - Instrumental, Chamber and Vocal Music 1
  13. Salome Kammer: Berstein: I hate music - I Hate Music
  14. Christopher Adler: The Wind Blows Inside - Epilogue For A Dark Day
  15. Morton Feldman: Vertical Thoughts 5 - Only
  16. Matthew Adkins: Ambient Instrumental - [60]Project
  17. University of Michigan Opera Theatre: Act I - Armide
Good:
  1. Rake's Progress: 'nuff said.
  2. Armide: Damn! It was nice to hear this again after singing it sophomore year. Thanks to the listener that suggested playing someone done by the University!
  3. Frieeeeends: It was awesome to have someone to talk to on the show for more than a few minutes.
Bad:
  1. Rake's Progress in Italian: Um, ew. That was atrocious. I'm still happy I played it, but...wow.
  2. Levels: I didn't realize how quiet the music was. With headphones on it comes through really clearly, but when I was listening back to it, you could barely hear the music. I'll remember that.
  3. Less talking?: Although I really enjoyed talking to Peter, I wonder if it was too much talking. Is that something you want on a Sunday morning, or would you rather have straight music?
More updates to come! Thanks for sticking with me!

Freestailo #27 - 3/21/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Freestailo #27 Here

It's been a long time guys, and I'm still trying to catch up on these blog posts while memorizing things for my senior recital hearing and write a 6-page paper on a Debussy Prelude while trying to make time to see the University Production's opera "The Rake's Progress" and possibly sleeping.

I recently went to my friend Sonya Schumann's recital, which was absolutely mind-blowingly amazing, and wanted to play at least one of the songs that she had played, so I chose "Baba-Yaga" by Modest Mussorgsky from "Pictures at an Exhibition," which is based on a series of paintings by Viktor Hartmann. Baba-Yaga is described as a "Hut on Fowl's Legs," and so I got curious and tried to find a few depictions of this mythical beast. It turns out that the real monster isn't the walking house, but rather the witch that lives inside the walking house. "Baba" in Russian is a woman old enough to marry (in this case a hag), and  "yaga" is a hut that encompasses a statue

I also wanted to correct myself from my show: the song by Coldplay I was thinking of is not "Strawberry Hill," but "Strawberry Swing" and not at all like "Blueberry Hill."

Playlist time.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Darkthrone: Blacksmith of the North (Keep That Ancient Fire) - Dark Thrones and Black Flags
  2. Sounds From The Ground: Drawn To The Woman - Three A.D. Future Music From The United Kingdom
  3. Preacher Boy: On And On It Goes - The Devil's Buttermilk
  4. The Ink Spots: Blueberry Hill - The Ink Spots
  5. Ibro: Wa casser - Eh! Wotan
  6. The Mulgrew Miller Trio: One's Own Room - Live At Yoshi's vol. 2
  7. Death Cab For Cutie: I Will Possess Your Heart - Narrow Stairs
  8. The Delgados: The Light Before We Land - Hate
  9. David Bowie: Love You Till Tuesday - Love You Till Tuesday
  10. David Medoff: Gevald! Di Bananas - From Avenue A To The Great White Way
  11. Ratatat: Montanita - Classics
  12. New Music Studium: Poulenc: Miel de Narbonne - Le Bal Masque
  13. Of Montreal: Spiteful Intervention - Paralytic Stalks
  14. Philharmonia Orchestra: Saint-Saëns: Danse macabre - Symphony No. 3
  15. Carlos Montoya: Soleá; Bulería por Soleá - Flamenco
  16. Miranda July: The Co-Star - The Binet-Simon Test
  17. Fourtet: Angel Echoes (Caribou Remix) - Angel Echoes + Remixes
  18. Randy Grief: A Furious Passion - Alice in Wonderland pt. 4
  19. Noriko Ogawa: IX. The Hut on Fowl's Legs, "Baba-Yaga" - Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
  20. Handsome Family: Where The Birch Tree Leans - Through The Trees
  21. Benümb: Clouding the Source of Salvation - By Means Of Upheaval
  22. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong: Moonlight in Vermont - Ella and Louis
  23. DJ Vadim: Fear Feats ft. Emo and Syrus - The Soundcatcher
Good:
  1. Stalker request: No, I don't mean I got a request from a stalker. I mean that I got a request from a listener for a song about stalkers! This is when I know my listeners understand me, because looking for requests like this is like a game. A puzzle. A post-tonal musical analysis. A proof. This occupied my mind for quite awhile.
  2.  The Ink Spots: Dayum boi. I like your style. I also like that the title of the song was "Blueberry Hill," which reminds me of the Coldplay song "Strawbery Swing" by the cadence of the title. I hope that's not a coincidence.
  3. Transitions: In general I think that area was really smooth today.
Bad:
  1. Very little direction: I didn't have anywhere I was really going with this, and I felt like I was mostly playing from song to song, which is rare for me. I usually have some small thread that I tie a few songs in, even if it's only for me.
  2. Lots 'o' long songs: Part of this is because...I wanted to play long songs. I was lazy for awhile and I wanted time to find songs.
  3. Loss for words: I was not doing so well with the words and sentences today, so thanks for putting up with me. Hahaha.
Until next time, chaps.

Freestailo #26 - 3/7/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Freestailo #26 Here

It has been so long! I missed you!

Sorry for the lack of an update for probably...two weeks? It's been pretty crazy. I was in an opera, I've been memorizing a ton of music for my recital, and as much as I wanted to update, I couldn't justify taking the time away from my other things.

I had an interesting progression through this show, and I'd like to know what you think of it. The most interesting point of the show for me was when I got a call from a listener asking to play my "favorite song in the entire world." It was a hard choice, but I went with the "Intermezzo" from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni. It's a pretty famous piece, and you've probably heard it in a movie or in a commercial or something. I originally heard it from Rurouni Kenshin in the scene when Kenshin and Kaoru say goodbye at the beginning of the Kyoto Arc, which is visually a stunning thing to watch as well.

I also decided to play "Pavlov's Daughter" by Regina Spektor later in the show, because that was my second choice at the moment.

Besides those things, I don't have much to say...on to the playlist!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Dizzy Gillespie: Synthetic Blues - Featuring Dizzy Gillespie
  2. Ray Charles: What's I Say? - Live
  3. The Last Poets: Black and Strong (Homesick) - Black and Strong (Homesick)

  6. Be Your Own Pet: Fire Department - Summer Sensation
  7. Buddy Holly: Maybe Baby - The Buddy Holly Story
  8. Vieux Drop: Sutu Kun - Via Jo

  28. Betty White: Delicious Dish (Dusty Muffin Sketch) - SNL
  29. Nord-Sud: Dagen Gryr - Fragments de routes
  30. Matthew Dear: Street Song - Headcage EP
Delicious dish:
  1. Betty White: I've been wanting to play this on the radio for a long time, and I'm really happy I finally remembered while I was DJing for once! The first time I heard this skit I knew that it needed to be played on the radio, because that's what makes the skit funny: that if there were no visuals this would sound like a pile of lesbians.
  2. Requests: Thanks for calling in, always.
  3. The Cardigans: Um wow. So, I thought I'd listened to the cardigans before, but apparently I hadn't, because I'm in love.
Disgusting dish:
  1. Very little direction: I had no real purpose during this show. There doesn't always need to be, but it felt like it was floating on the surface of something really good, you know?
  2. ...: I really can't think of anything guys. I'm actually pretty happy with the show. Not overjoyed, but I can't really find any specific flaws except perhaps a lack of excitement on my part.
Until next time. Adieu.

Freestailo #25 - 2/29/12 - Video Game Special!

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Freestailo #25 Here

Itsa me! Freestailooooooo!

How I imagined my listeners during this show
This was a very special show for me, and something I've been thinking about doing for awhile. I've had moments in my show when I play video game music, such as the Super Mario RPG segment, and the Pokemon segment, but I've been telling myself that a show entirely made of video game music would be the best show ever. And I was right.

How I imagined myself during this show
The best thing by far about this show was that I've never gotten so many calls/messages into the station during one set in my life. I can't tell you how excited I was. Reverend Andrew was e-mailing me and IMing me with videos like this that I unfortunately didn't get to play, I got numerous requests besides those, including The Minibosses, Counter Cosby, Final Fantasy VIII, and Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball. This is what I live for, so thanks for fueling my fire. The highlight of this is when I got a call from a gamer who was SO EXCITED that I knew what the Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon game was, and that I played a song from it.

I would also love to hear your thoughts about games that I should have played from but didn't. The ones that immediately came to mind were: World of Warcraft, Donkey Kong, (more) Star Fox, and Sonic the Hedgehog. I realized after scouring the station for video game soundtracks, that we have only TWO: Super Mario 64, and Final Fantasy X. That's kind of tragic guys. I want to fix that so that all you can have the possibility of quality video game music over the airwaves at all times. And by the way listeners: what WOULD you want to have in the station? Shoot me some suggestions and I will do my best to get them in the station.

How I actually was during this show
Something I also wanted to mention is how good it felt to talk on the radio again. Perhaps I've been getting lazy or insecure about talking on the radio lately, but with this I had no problems. I still need to work on the flow of speech, but that's something that will come with more practice, methinks. Another question for you though: what kind of things would you want me to talk about? Would you want me to tell you stories? More video game nostalgia? Poetry?

A little thing I want to say to Nintendo: Thank you for existing. Without you, I would have had a much shittier childhood, and I definitely wouldn't be the person I am today.

Now. On to this epic playlist Why not curl up with your old brick Gameboy and take a listen?

EDIT: Also, I got a message from a friend giving me a correction to a comment I made on "Luigi's Mansion." It was NOT the first game Luigi starred in, because that honor goes to "Mario Is Missing" for the SNES, which I played as a kid and completely forgot about, so shame on me.

1-Ups:
  1. So many requests!: I can say with no exaggeration that I got more calls for comments and requests during this show than any other show I've done. It really motivated me to keep going, and gave me inspiration to pick from new games.
  2. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon: This is one of my absolutely favorite games in the world, and after I played the intro theme to it, I got a call from a guy who was so excited that someone else had even PLAYED this game.
  3. Mix of games: Although I definitely could have branched out to other games, I feel very satisfied with the variety of games that I used.
Poison Mushrooms:
  1. DJ not showing up: This wouldn't have affected too much of my set, but truthfully, I was done DJing after I played the last Animal Crossing track. The others were to fill time, although I still enjoyed playing them for you.
  2. Transitions in general: As I was trying to adjust to the reality of only being able to use CDs, my laptop, and the studio computer, I realized I had dramatically gone from 9 modes of play, to 3. This meant that I had to balance what I played from medium to medium, which is harder than it sounds. At first I set my iTunes to fade into the next song automatically, but I realized with the Katamari Damacy track that was a very bad idea. Although I eventually got more used to how to transition between only 3 mediums (and largely 2), there were still a few wonky moments. I think most of what I had to learn was that I needed a bit quicker hand, and precise timing.
  3. HAWP: Although I love the Burchs, I should have picked a less visual, and more aural video, because, although I was thoroughly entertained by the thought of Ashly Burch eating puppies and peptobismal, you couldn't see any of it. This is why sometimes I wish radio had video...but not television. That's a topic for another day.
  4. Less ummmmms: Although I'm happy with the amount of talking I did throughout the show, upon listening I was a little annoyed with the amount of "um"s and "uh"s I heard, so I'm sure you were annoyed as well. I will work on that and try to speak in complete sentences.
Give me comments! I want your feedback! And if you want to know where I got any of the music you heard today, just drop me a line and I'll point you in the right direction.

Subshow #15 - 2/29/12

I'm only 55 years old! Weeee!
Happy Leap Year and Happy Birthday Gioachino Rossini, folks!

I knew I wanted to start this set off right when I heard that it was Rossini's birthday, because he is a composer near and dear to my heart. I've sung a lot of his music, I've watched a lot of his operas, and I think that if he were alive, we might be able to have a beer together pretty easily. Maybe that's my classical fangirl side coming out though. I was very happy to play so much Rossini, and especially to find the Bugs Bunny clip online. I also got a call requesting The Thieving Magpie (La gazza ladra) from a listener, which I wouldn't have found on the "A Clockwork Orange" soundtrack. So thanks!

Janelle Monae as a robot. NBD.
The second major part of my show was space themed, but not for any reason, and definitely not intentionally. I think it started with Rare Air, and was broken up by Doctor Zhivago and Nicolai Gedda, and continued until the end, which really makes up about half my show. And I would date to call the mini Russian set "Zhivago in Space," simply to keep the theme in tact. While I was slowly realizing the monster I had created with the space theme, I started to get a few calls into the station. One request for Mose Allison, and another request for Blackalicious. If I hadn't gotten that extra push to keep the theme going, I think I might have given up. After I got those requests, something stirred inside me, and I not only wanted to keep finding space/chemistry themed songs/artist, but it was almost a compulsion. If I didn't find something, I would have failed myself.

I forgot how long 2.5 hours is for some reason. The last time I did a 3-hour show is when I had my 3-6am slot last semester. Since then I've pretty much only done 1-2 hour slots. It's amazing what an extra 30 minutes can do for your creativity. One to the playlist, and I hope you enjoy it! Perhaps you should buy a cup of coffee and sit down with a comic before you listen. Take a few hours off.

  35. Janelle Monae: Violet Stars Happy Hunting!!! - Metropolis: The Chase Suite
  36. Science Fiction Dance Party: Monster on Saturn I - Dance With Action
ZOMG!:
  1. Rossini: I was talking to another DJ, and we both agreed that at a non-freeform station, playing the same artist 5 songs in a row would not be allowed, but because we're WCBN, we can celebrate Rossini's birthday properly.
  2. Ella: Because I had just come in from the fog, I really enjoyed playing "A Foggy Day," and I hope it made the fog a bit more romantic for someone.
  3. Atomic Energy layering: Within the space theme, this was definitely my favorite moment. I loved layering just a couple of simple things and letting it play out. It's rare that I get a voice-only track to layer with music, and this was a piece of gold.
NOMG!:
  1. Kill da Wabbit: I really didn't want to play this track. I meant to play the Barber of Seville Bugs Bunny track, but apparently that wasn't on the CD. Womp womp.
  2. EAS TEST: Not that I can do anything about it, but I hope it doesn't bother you too much.
  3. Not enough Star Wars: I should have played this whole effing CD when I found it. It's so good.
Live long and prosper, listeners.

Subshow #14 - 2/27/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Subshow #14 Here

Guess who took another subshow slot?! Heheheh. HehehEHehehehehEHEHEHE. HEHEHEHHEHEHEHEHEHEH!

I also went recording shopping recently, which is where about a third of today's set comes from. It was interesting to bring in my own records from home, which is something I've seen other DJs do. I've on occasion brought a single record with me, but this time I literally brought 5 or 6, almost on compulsion, because I wanted you all to hear my new jams.

The Tchaikovsky especially was fun to play for me, since it gave me a lot of warm fuzzy memories about freshman year when I was in the chorus for "Eugene Onegin" when the University put it on. It's one of my top 5 favorite operas, and something I highly suggest if you don't get into opera that much.

Pretty straight-forward set, so I'll just let you listen to it.

  2. Rhythm Heritage: I think I'm obsessed. I knew I hit gold, but now I'm in for the win.
  3. Arctic Monkeys: I'm a big fan of the Arctic Monkeys, and I was pretty pleased when I found our collection of CDs in the library, especially because there's more than one album I don't have.
Cold:
  1. Come To My Island: While I was running around the station I got a message from Brian Tomsic saying how horrible the KC and the Sunshine Band song was, and I think I agree. It's pretty dreadful.
  2. Announcements: Not that I'm perfect at reading the concert/events information, but today was pretty bad. Sorry about that. Maybe I should talk slower. And not ramble so much.
  3. Lazy Transitions: Nothing to do here.
Thanks for reading/listening/whatevering! Keep doing that!
