Radiozilla #5 - 8/19/12

Puffy Amiyumi
HEY I'M BACK! You still missed me, right?

So as the rotation gods would have it, I had the Latin Show and Radiozilla back-to-back this Sunday, and honestly, and can't think of a better two hour slot to have. This Radiozilla was especially eventful because I had two people in the studio with me, one being my friend who was visiting, and another being Gus, who is a trainee to become a real-life WCBN DJ! Yaaaay Gus! Luckily for me (and him, who are we kidding), he chose to do his specialty apprenticeship with me during Radiozilla, so a few of these tracks were picked out by him! I've notated which ones with a "+" beforehand. We also learned that we have similar favorite SNES, such as Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG, which makes me like Gus a lot, so we'll probably be best friends now.

Seriously though, it's amazing to see these newbies, and what kind of music they pick out when they have the chance to explore. That's a major thing I love about WCBN, and sometimes I wish we could do more collaborative radio, like how this show was done.

Anyway, enough jibber-jabber.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Polysics: Buggie Technica - Hey! Bob! My Friend!
  2. Puffy Amiyumi: Radio Tokyo - Splurge
  3. +Nobukazu Takemura: Everyone Gets His Own Nemesis - Akey To The Underworld
  4. Nubuo Uematsu: Battle Theme - Final Fantasy X
  5. Petty Booka: Chotto Matte Kudasai - Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian
  6. Asobi Seksu: I'm Happy But You Don't Like Me - Asobi Seksu
  7. Xtatika: Gone - Tongue Bath
  8. Mai Hoshimura: Stay With You - Japan For Sale Vol. 3
  9. +Ken Ishii: Frame Out - Jelly Tones
  10. Yoko Kanno: Cat's Delicacy - Vision of Escaflowne OST 2
  11. +Martin Atkins' China Dub Soundsystem: Mostly Hulusi - Made In China
  12. Kicking Giant: Alien ID - Alien ID
  13. +Atau: delull - biorhythms
  14. +Himawari: Wonder Pan - Mineral
  15. Fushitsusha: (track 3) - DBL Live Disc 2
I'm Happy:
  1. Gus ole buddy: Gus did a really great job, and I don't think I can say enough how happy I am to have him at WCBN now, and how excited I am to hear what kind of music he checks out in the future for his own show.
  2. Puffy Amiyumi: Remember that cartoon, Teen Titans? Well, I don't know about you, but the first time I heard of Puffy Amiyumi was because they did the theme song to this show, and I'm not going to lie...I really liked this show. I also had NO IDEA we had so much Puffy Amiyumi in the station! You will hear more Puffy Amiyumi on my freeform show soon...
  3. Martin Atkins: This track was so great. So, so, so great. I love how the hulusi was incorporated, and I really want to figure out how much of it was analog, and how much of it was digitally composed. Songs where I have to question that are what really blow my mind. Good pick, Gus!
But You Don't Like Me:
  1. Honestly I got nuthin': This was a great show.
Ja ne, minna-san!

Cumbia dancing
Hola chicos, ¿cómo estás? Hoy me tocan música latina para usted!

I don't normally do the Latin show, but I really love Latin music for a reason unknown to me as of yet. It could be because our Latin section is BALLER but who knows. This was an especially lively show because there were a lot of people milling about: me, my friend who visited me at the station, and about 4 random guys in the lobby who I ran into. Actually, one of them was Argentinian, and he was really enjoying the show. Yay!

Something interesting happened on the show today. I had a listener call in asking for something "cumbia." I asked him for maybe a band name, but he said, "You could probably educate me on some band names." This is something I find interesting, and I want to call attention to it. I was talking to another friend, who listens to WCBN quite a lot, and is a self-proclaimed groupie. We were talking about my process for picking out music, and she suddenly said, "Wait, you don't listen to everything before hand? I thought you only played music you knew really well." I want to say right now, listeners, that this is 100% false. Most of the tracks I play I have never listened to. When I go to the station to DJ, I intend to explore the library, and open my horizons. When I play the Latin show, I want to learn more about Latin music, and share what I'm learning with you. I'm not trying to oppress you with my choices, but work with you to create something really beautiful. If you have a request, I love to take them. If you don't have a request, I want to share what I think sounds interesting or new to me. Sometimes I'll even play tracks that I'm at first skeptical about so that I can learn more about it.

That's my two-cents. Enjoy the show.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Rodriguez: Barcelona Boogie - Tell An Amigo
  2. Novalima: Guayabo - Karimba
  3. Chico Trujillo: Ahora quien - Chico De Oro
  4. José Maria Vitier: Samba al sur - Habana Secreta
  5. Las Rubias del Norte: Porque Te Vas - Ziguala
  6. Flaco Jimenez: En El Cielo No Hay Cerveza (In Heaven There Is No Beer) - Squeeze Box King
  7. Orishas: Que Se Bote - El Kilo
  8. Grupo Fantasma: Realizando - El Existential
  9. Astor Piazzolla: Hora Cero - Luna
  10. Jose Barros: La Piragua - Cumbia Cumbia
  11. Flor de Caña: Banana - ¡Muevete!
  12. Manuel Alvarez y Sus Dangers: Esclavo Moderno - Palenque Palenque
  13. Ned Sublette: Ghost Riders in the Sky - Cowboy Rumba
  14. DJ Dolores: De Dar Dó - Aparelhagem
No es tan malo:
  1. Comboy Rumba:  I had a friend from out of town visiting my show to keep me company, and told her she could help me pick out music if she wanted. She chose the Cowboy Rumba track, and then stopped because she thought she was doing a bad job. Surprise though, that track was awesome.
  2. Cumbia: So glad my listener requested this! It was fantastic!
Radiozilla que hasta la próxima!

What It Is #4 - 7/20/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download What It Is #4 Here

There wasn't anything particularly special about this show (aside from the fact that soul and funk are awesome), but I really enjoyed spinning these tunes, and I'm sure you'll enjoy them. I did get one call from a listener who requested a string of Motown, but it was within the last 10 minutes of the show, so I tried my best to accomodate.

By the way, if you have anything you want me to play, did you know you can request songs? You can call (734) 763-3500, which will connect you right to the FM Studio at WCBN, and you can talk to the DJ who is currently DJ AT THAT MOMENT to request a song. It's pretty exciting. You should do it often, because we love you guys.

Let's get your funk on.

  25. Stevie Wonder: Front Line - Front Line

Okey:
  1. Daptone goodness: I love pretty much everything by Daptone. I should make a list for myself of all the Daptone in the CD section, because I have literally never been disappointed by them.
Nokey:
  1. Barry White: Ehhhh this was okaaaay but a little not at all what I was expecting.
Solid show. See you soon.

Dead White Guys #3 - 7/15/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Dead White Guys #3 Here

Although I didn't play a lot of tracks for this show, I had a lot of fun with what I played. I retrospectively played a lot of vocal music, but I never apologize for that, and I can only hope that you enjoy it. I don't think there was a boring moment for me, and it felt really good to play the full set of 'Das Buch der Hängende Gärten', as well as the entire 'Also Sprach Zarathustra'.

I think I had a really good mix today, and I'm glad that I allowed myself to play longer tracks, which is kind of a self-experiment that I've been trying lately, like with the latest Sounds of the Subcontinent episode I did. I also have been thinking a lot about the way that I actually play the music. It's a hotly debated topic amongst DJs about whether we should talk over music, or whether we shouldn't. There's no wrong way to do it, but DJs can be passionate about what they think is a good way to do it. Personally, as you can hear, I like to speak over music. I think it adds something to the way that I speak, and just feel more comfortable having something underneath me, and makes it sonically more interesting. That said though, I often get very uncomfortable speaking over classical music on a classical show, because I've heard from some listeners that they REALLY hate when I talk over music that they might want to experience as a whole, from start to finish. I can completely understand that, but it is definitely a different way of doing radio than I'm used to.

What do you think? Do you mind when a DJ talks over music? I want to know!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Pierre Charial: Capriccio No. 1 - György Ligeti: Mechanical Music
  2. London Philharmonic Orchestra: Cantus - 'Song of the Odyssey' - Karl Jenkins: Adiemus 2 Cantata Mundi
  3. Emanuel Ax: Variations on "Là ci darem la mano," Op. 2 for Piano and Orchestra (Largo) - Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, etc.
  4. London Chamber Singers & Chamber Orchestra: The Indian Queen Acts III, IV, & V - Purcell: The Indian Queen
  5. Angela Hewitt: La Verneüille (from Dix-huitième Ordre) - Couperin: Le Grand
  6. Jennifer Lane: Das Buch der Hängende Gärten (complete) - Schoenberg: Das Buch der Hängende Gärten
  7. L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande: La Valse - Ravel: Ravel's Head
  8. Staatsoper Berlin Chorus and Orchestra: Overture & Act I, Scene 1 - Wagner: Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman)
  9. L'ensemble Diabolus in Musica: Introït, Kyrie, and Gloria - Dufay: Missa se la face ay pale
  10. Vienna Philharmonic: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
Angelus:
  1. Schoenberg: I could definitely listen to this all day, and I have no idea way. I really like atonal music, and the Sprechstimme (unpitched speak-sing thing) is so interesting to me as a performer, as well as a listener. I really, really hope you enjoyed this set. I also encourage you to check out the translations/text for it!
  2. Strauss: I never get sick of Strauss, and I hadn't heard this piece before. I didn't realize how epic this was, or that this was where that theme that's right at the beginning came from that sometimes you'll hear in commercials/movies I think.
Diabolus:
  1. I wasn't really unhappy with anything, to be honest. I thought this was a great show. Maybe sometimes I'm awkward on the mic, but that's about it!
Enjoy!

Sounds of the Subcontinent #2 - 7/15/12

SURPRISE! I subbed Sounds of the Subcontinent for David, so now you get to listen to some awesome Indian music from our library. I happened to be at the station doing Radiozilla, when I got a call from David Schlitt, asking if I could sub for him, and if I was in the area. I was literally sitting in front of the console like a boss, so I took it.

I love this show, because it gives me a chance to play long tracks that I might not otherwise feel like I'm allowed to play on my freeform show, like how with Radiozilla I'm able to play lots of Japanese stuff all together. I can sit back and really enjoy the music instead of running around and trying to fill up time.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Zakir Hussain: Nines Over Easy - Zakir Hussain and the Rhythm Experience
  2. Tabla Beat Science: Secret Channel - Tala Matrix
  3. M. Saeed Chisti: (track 3) - Qari Sage Miran
  4. Dissidenten: Jungle Book Part 1 - The Jungle Book
  5. Rahul Sharma: Maqam-E-Navaa - Music of the Himalayas
  6. Ustad Vilayat Khan (sitar): Jor - Raga Bhairavi
  7. Ashwin Batish: Sitar Magic - Sitar Power
  8. Jody Stecher & Krishna Bhatt: Blue Mountain - rasa
  9. The Cheetah Girls: One World - One World Soundtrack
  10. Gour Goswami & Steven Gorn: Rag Marwa/Sunset Raga - The Indian Bamboo Flute
Good stuff:
  1. Tabla Beat Science: I really love these guys, and I love the mix of sounds that they create. I could definitely listen to the entire album all the way through.
  2. Zakir Hussain: I don't know what it is about this guy, but he brings this really jazzy edge to his songs that I love.
Not so good stuff:
  1. Blue Mountain: This did not sound like Indian music whatsoever. It was in the Indian music section, and it had a sitar on the front, but it was definitely not what I was looking for. I even got a call from a listener about whether it was still Sounds of the Subcontinent or not. *headdesk* Not to self: preview tracks longer than 5 seconds.
See you soon! Thanks for listening!

Le Polysics
Did you know that I really like DJing Radiozilla? I do. It's only an hour, and I still have to read concert information right in the middle of it, but it's really fun. Having the freedom to play all Japanese music for you is something that I wouldn't allow myself on my freeform show, so sometimes I wonder if it still sounds like me, you know? Does it sound like MY radio? I would love to hear what you think about it.

Also, I've come to realize that I play a song by Polysics every single Radiozilla. I also play it on my freeform show. And you know, I think I realized that I'm kind of obsessed with them. Sometimes I can't listen to an entire album in one sitting, but they are the perfect mix for freeform-style radio. Thank you for existing, Polysics.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Polysics: Married To A Frenchman - Hey! Bob! My Friend!
  2. Asobi Seksu: Coming Up - Fluorescence
  3. Koenjihyakkei: Guoth Dahha - Viva Koenji!!
  4. Oorutaichi: (track 11) - Jurasy Human
  5. Matally: Four Seasons VS YoYo-C - Japan For Sale Vol. 3
  6. Thee Machine Gun Elephant: Citroën No Kodoku (The Loneliness of Citroën) - Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter
  7. Joe Hisaishi: Kaonashi (No Face) - Spirited Away OST
  8. Ken Ishii: Iceblink (main mix) - Japan For Sale Vol. 2
  9. The Pillows: Tiny Boat - The Pillows Acoustic
  10. Tokyo Jihen: FAIR - 2012???
  11. Takemoto Akira: Island in Video Casset - Serial Experiments Lain
  12. Gackt: Vanilla - Vanilla
FAIR:
  1. New Polysics album: Yay! More Polysics for you! This new album's really fun, and kind of more of the same style as other Polysics albums, so...it's perfect basically.
  2. Spirited Away: Mmmm I'm so glad I found this album in the soundtrack section. I love the music to this movie, and I wish that we had more Miyazaki movie OSTs in the library! Like My Neighbor Totoro? I would kill someone for that.
NO FAIR:
  1. Too much online music: In retrospect I realize that 3 out of the last 4 songs were from a computer online, which I don't normally do at such frequency, and especially for such a short show. I'll be more careful next time, although I really did want to play those artists for you.
Thanks for listening! Stay tuned for more updates!

Latin Show #2 - 6/1/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Latin Show #2 Here

Is it possible I've only done one other Latin show besides this?! Apparently so. I will make up for that soon. Also, as a side note, my ex-roommate came to visit me at the station, and I'm pretty sure she had fun, so that's good too. Also, here are some pictures of Los Zafiros, because I said so.

I got nothin' else. TO THE PLAYLIST!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Astor Piazzola: Los Sueños - Sur
  2. Nova Lima: Mamaye - Karimba
  3. Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto: Bim Bom - A Day in New York
  4. Tom Zé: Curiosidade (High Llamas Remix) - Postmodern Platos
  5. Inti-Illimani: La Fiesta Eres Tú - Amar de Nuevo
  6. Tangosur: Sur - Trio
  7. Bio Ritmo: La Mano Arriba - Salsa Galactica
  8. Agepé: Ela Nao Gosta De Mim - Collo. Samba
  9. Lazaro Ros & Olorun: Toques a Eleguá - Songs For Elegua
  10. Ben Tavera King Y Los Jazztecs: El Mercado - Border Crossings
  11. Los Zafiros: La Caminadora - Bossa Cubana
  12. J-Radical: Buweyah - Brazil Remixed
  13. Los Calchakis: Isla Saca - Indian Flutes, Harps and Guitars
  14. Zuco 103: Garganteiro - Whaa!
Bueno:
  1. Astor Piazzola: I never get tired of this man. He is a genius.
  2. Los Zafiros: I had NO IDEA that there was a doo-wop style group in Spanish! This has to be the best find for the day.
Male:
  1. My pronunciation: Sorry if I screwed anything up (I know I did). I don't speak Spanish, but I'm trying to get better at pronouncing it. Sometimes my knowledge of Italian gets in the way, so it probably sounds a little...weird is the only word.
Thanks for listening! Be back this Friday for my regular show!

Open Sign-Up #2/Sounds of the Sub-Continent #1 - 5/6/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Open Sign-Up #2/Sounds of the Subcontinent #1 Here

So I went into the station with the intention of playing freeform, because it's open sign-up, right? Well, that didn't seem to sit well with the guys there, and said that a lot of people would get angry if I didn't play the regularly scheduled programming of Sound of the Sub-Continent. I didn't really think anything of this, because my gut reaction is, "Don't tell me what to do. I play what I want. This is WCBN." Immediately after thinking this though, and hitting play on my interview with Sahar, I got a call from a listener who wanted to know when the schedule changed, and when Sounds of the Subcontinent was on now. Kind of surprised I told him it hadn't gone anywhere, but that it was open-sign up, and that I would play some Sounds after the interview.

That's when I really realized how much people love us, without us knowing it sometimes. That man probably tunes in every week to hear Sounds of the Subcontinent, and he probably doesn't get to listen to Indian music most of the week otherwise. The moral I learned is that people are listening whether you think they are or not.

Also, I previously wrote a review for Sahar Nouri's master's recital, and here is the interview that I conducted with her!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Heidi Madagame and Sahar Nouri: Interview with Sahar Nouri
  2. P. Suseela/S. Rajeswari/S. Janaki: Isaiyarasi - Doob Doob O' Rama
  3. Unknown: Radio Calcutta #2 - Radio India Vol. 2
  4. K.S. Chithra: Kaiyodu Ennai - K.S. Chithra
  5. Pandit Shivkumar Sharma (santoor), Zakir Hussain (tabla): Drut Gat - Shivkumar Sharma
  6. Arati Ankalikar-Tikekar: Drut Bandish In Tintal - Arati Ankalikar-Tikekar
  7. Sumkali: Tala Thali - Mandali
Thanks for listening! Keep checking back for updates!

Surprise Radiozilla #3 - 2/26/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Radiozilla #3 Here

Minekawa-san with a cat
Konnichiwa, minna-san! Today's Radiozilla is brought to you by...*drumroll*...a surprise no-show DJ after the Latin show! Luckily, I really like Radiozilla, and I really like WCBN, and I'm on spring break, so I was happy to stay.

Miyavi-san with a cat
Honestly, I didn't feel great about this show, purely because I wasn't prepared to actually DJ this show. I usually come to the station about 15-30 minutes before I do a show so that I can pick out music, and accumulate a nice pile of CDs/LPs so that I don't have to run around the station a lot. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I was doing this time. For a freeform show it's pretty easy to operate like that, because I have the freedom to literally grab whatever I want. But with an all-Japanese show, I must grab Japanese music. Here's the trick: there's no Japanese section. I need to literally scan all of the sections to find Japanese artists, or go from the Japanese artists that I know. I had a little bit of help from a special guest in the station, but I still felt a bit stressed. I hope that didn't come across.

Although this show isn't cat themed, I hope you like these pictures of two amazing artists which you will hear in this set with some cats (fake and real ones), and this other picture of a cat meme!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Kodó: Strobe's Nanafushi (Satori Mix) - Sai-So
  2. Miyavi: Are You Ready To Love? - Miyaviuta (Dokuso)
  3. Takako Minekawa: Sleep Song (Remixed by portastic) - Recubed EP
  4. Cibo Matto: Working For Vacation - Stereo Type A
  5. Puffy: Circuit No Musume - Japan Not For Sale vol. 2
  6. Sachiko: Tokyo Song - Fork in the Road/Tokyo Song
  7. Kahimi Karie: Lolitapop Dollhouse - Kahimi Karie
  8. Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O - Pink Lady Lemonade (I Want To Drink You) - Live in Occident
  9. Cornelius: The Micro Disneycal World Tour - Fantasma
  10. Tujiko Noriko: Kiminotameni - From Tokyo To Naiagara
  11. Supercar: White Surf style 5. - Japan For Sale
  12. Yoko Kanno: Pokketto O Karani - Escaflowne Over the Sky
  13. High Rise: Mainliner - Live
DJs who show up for their shows:
  1. Last-minute sub award: 'nuff said.
  2. High Rise: Always a pleasure. I always try to keep them in the back of my mind during Radiozilla, because we have like 5 albums of their stuff.
DJs who forget their shows and don't apologize:
  1. Sub-par picks: Apart from the tracks that my special guest picked out, I felt like my own tracks were a bit below the bar that I aim for Radiozilla. I like upbeat tracks contrasted with pretty acoustic tracks, but it felt really all over the place today.
Sorry, not much to say for such a short show. Still hope you enjoy it!

Latin Show #1 - 2/26/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Latin Show #1 Here

Hola, amigos! I subbed the Latin show today!

I've been wanting to get on this show for a long time, but it just never happened. This is exactly why: it was third on my preferences for specialty shows. Now, I know what you're thinking, "Well, Heidi. You can't really expect to be on the Latin show if it's your THIRD preference." But here's the thing, my other specialty shows I rotate are "What It Is" and "Radiozilla," which I both really enjoy. I simply HAD to put a third preference. Really, in a perfect world, I would be on ALL the specialty shows. Also, incidentally, it was my half-birthday this day. So happy half-birthday to me.

Astor Piazzolla: Si, feliz cumpleaños, Heidi.
That aside, I had a lot of fun DJing this set, and hopefully it'll give you a little something to dance to while you do dishes, which is what I'm going to do.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Bio Ritmo: Muchacho - Biónico
  2. Grupo Exploracion: Congo Timba - Drum Jam
  3. Gotan Project: Arrabal - Lunático
  4. Astor Piazzolla: Butcher's Death - The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night
  5. Tito Puente: El Timbalon - Un Poco Loco
  6. Roberto Poveda: Libertad - Son Electrico
  7. Los Van Van: Recaditos No - Songo
  8. Nova Lima: Libertá - Coba Coba
  9. Michel Portal & Richard Galliano: Libertango - Concerts
  10. Urubamba: Heart of the Inca King - Urubamba
  11. Claudia Gomez: Mi Gustaría Cantar - Tierradentro
  12. Grupo Fantasma: Calor - El Existential
  13. Los Calchakis: La Rosa Y La Espina - Indian Flutes, Harps and Guitars
  14. Tonino Caratone: Amar y Vivar - Latin Alternative Music Conference 2001
  15. Adalberto Alvarez & María José Santiago: La Primavera - Flamenco Son
  16. Sukay: Carneval Del Colibrí - Tutayay
Me gusta:
  1. Astor Piazzolla: This LP was one of the most interesting things I've seen in a long time. On the cover it had a man licking a woman's armpit while they were dancing, and it was all in red. A lot of these songs had super interesting names too. And the whole thing was really damn good.
  2. Tema de la libertad: I didn't specifically mean to, but I played a lot of songs with some form of "libertad" in the title. I also think it's funny that a lot of Latin music has that as a theme. Anyone know why? I'm really asking.
No me gusta:
  1. Failure to find Spanish promos/PSAs: The first legal ID I played was in Spanish, but after that I completely failed to find them, which was something I really wanted to keep the mood of the show in tact.
  2. Too short: I need more of this in my life.
Thanks for listening! Let me know if you like my version of the Latin show, and if you want to hear me do the Latin show again!

What It Is #2 - 1/20/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download What It Is #2 Here

What is up, listeners? I've been jammin' in the studio with some good ol' soul jams.

This show is one that I FORGOT TO POST for all of you, and I am SO SORRY. I posted the 6 O'Clock Shadow hour that I did that day, but not this one. Some exciting things happened on this episode of What It Is, including having a special guest, my very good friend Sarah, in the studio taking some documentary photography while I did my thang.

I really have nothing else to say, so let's get to it!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. The Bar-Kays: Let's Have Some Fun - Flying High On Your Love
  2. Bootsy Collins: 1st One 2 The Egg Wins (The Human Race) - What's Bootsy Doin'?
  3. Charles Bradley: In You (I Found A Love) - No Time For Dreaming
  4. Goldenrod: Death of Concept of Future - Painting for Prophets
  5. Ginuwine: Pony (album version) - Pony
  6. The Fifth Dimension: We Could Fly - Star Dancing
  7. Al Green: I'd Fly Away - Full of Fire
  8. Marvin Gaye: Right On - What's Going On?
  9. Maze: The Look In Your Eyes - Joy And Pain

6 O' Clock Shadow #2 - 1/20/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download 6 O'Clock Shadow #2 Here

IT'S 18:00 GUYS!!! Do you know what that means? In American it means 6:00pm, and on a Friday that means that it's 6 O'Clock Shadow time. When you come into the station and pick out music to play on the 88.3 FM airwaves.

Today I actually had a Shadower! His name is Tom, and apparently he's been wanting to come to the 6:00 Shadow for awhile, but just hasn't been able to get there because of work or life or whatever. He picked out songs #10-17. He came in to the studio and was immediately overwhelmed by all of the choices, and especially the local artist section, which is pretty stellar. At the same time Tom was in the studio, Winnie was training a new DJ as well! Anyway, that particular trainee was one that James and I grabbed in the Union at Winterfest, so it was pretty gratifying to see someone that I snagged in the station and making a mix tape! Like a monster that I helped to create!

Freeform! It's alive! It's ALIVE! Mwahahahahaha!
With such a short list there's not much to say, but I hope I've piqued your interest enough to make you want to check out the studio. You are always welcome.

No thank you:

Radiozilla #2 - 1/1/12

RAWWWWR!!!

That's Zilla for "HEY I LOVE YOU HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

This set seemed really tight to me. I really liked what I was playing, the transitions were good, and I felt like I was constantly busy doing something, which is good for an hour show. Something I realized about myself while DJing Radiozilla is that as far as an hour show is concerned, I never want to play anything that's too downbeat. Almost all of these tracks are upbeat, or at least have some sort of pulse underneath. I almost played some avant-garde Japanese stuff (you know, no beat, no key, etc.) but I just couldn't do it.

It's always a funny balance of playing my personal library and the WCBN library. For the most part I try to play as much WCBN music as possible, since everything's so good here, but when it comes to specialty shows, a large part of me starts to scream, "Hey! Listen to this! Isn't this cool! I have cool music too!" Especially with Japanese music this is true, because I used to listen to it a lot, so I have all these bands floating in my head that we just don't have in the library. Because of how tight the set turned out, I'm inclined to think that I made a good decision today, but it's something that I want to be careful not to get comfortable with.

Also, here's the translation for Onaji yoru, if you're interested. Romaji, Kanji, and English are all there.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Plastics: Robot - Plastics
  2. Polysics: Walky Talky - Now is the time!
  3. Yoshida Brothers: Morricone - III
  4. Fantastic Plastic Machine: Bon Voyage + L'aventure Fantastique - The Fantastic Plastic Machine
  5. TM Revolution: MID-NITE WARRIORS - triple joker
  6. Lab Life: World Wide Love Song - Japan Not For Sale vol. 2
  7. Shiina Ringo: Onaji yoru - Muzai Moratorium
  8. Suppa Micro Pamchopp: Maimerodii - Obake
  9. Yohihito Yano, Saki Kabata: Lonely Rolling Star - Katamari Damacy OST
  10. Akiko Yano: Soredakede Ureshii (That's All It Takes) - Piano Nightly
  11. Makoto Kawamoto: 1/2 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Best Theme Collection
  12. Uzume Taiko: Chirashi - Chirashi
  13. Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts: Ask DNA - Cowboy Bebop OST
  14. Dog Hair Dressers: Orange Juice - Japan For Sale
  15. Junichi Masuda: The Road to Cerulean from Mt. Moon - Pokemon OST
  16. Nobuo Uematsu, Junya Nakano, Masashi Hamauzu: Chocobo Jam - Final Fantasy X OST
Japan For Sale:
  1. Pokemon: What better way to start the New Year than with some motivation video game music? No way, that's what.
  2. Plastics: This is one of the few Japanese rock LPs in the library I think, so I'm happy to play it for you. I really like it actually, so maybe I'll play it on my freeform show sometime.
  3. Shiina Ringo: This song is near and dear to my heart, and I'm very happy to share it with you. It tends to break hearts, so watch out.
Japan Not For Sale:
  1. Too much from comp?: I'm not sure about this, but I played quite a few from my personal library, which I don't normally do. It's not that I didn't have enough CDs--I had more than enough, believe you me--but I really wanted to share some of these tracks with you for this show. Nevertheless, I'm wondering whether it was a good thing. What do you think?
Thanks for listening to the New Year's Marathon, brought to you by Freestailo, Inc. We hope to be serving you in the near future.

Subshow #11 - 1/1/12

Willkommen, Leute! Ich habe classische Musik gespielt. Ich hoffe es klingt gut für euch.

I thought that it would be a simple matter to put classical music together for a 3-hour show, but oddly enough, it wasn't. Despite being a classical music major, and despite being able to play music easily in freeform style, classical music seemed to elude me this day. It was an interesting challenge, and one that I hope to repeat in the future. It requires such a great knowledge of classical music to do a show like this, and I really respect Peter for doing it every week, and I think that WCBN is truly lucky to have someone like him with us.

I played a lot of opera, a lot of choral works, and a lot of lieder on this show, and I'm not sorry. I'm glad that I could share it with you, and I really hope that you enjoy it, because this is the music that I love.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Robert Shaw: O Fortuna - Orff: Carmina Burana
  2. Boston Baroque: Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV 351 - Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks and Water Music

  4. London Symphony Orchestra: Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker Overture - The Nutcracker, op. 71
  5. The New York Electric String Ensemble: Purcell: Presto from a Sonata in D Major - Tapestry
  6. David Russel: Sonata in C Major, K. 501 - Plays Baroque Music
  7. Sarah Connolly: Korngold: Fünf Lieder, Op. 38, Glückwunsch - Sonnett Für Wien
  8. Philadelphia Orchestra: Tchaikovsky: "Waltz" from Act I of Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66 - Russian Music & Revolution
  9. Kodály Quartet: Haydn: Quartet No. 34 in B Flat Major, Op. 33, No. 4, Allegro moderato - "Russian Quartets" Op. 33, Nos. 3, 4 and 6
  10. Joyce DiDonato: Things Change, Jo - Adamo: Little Women
  11. Houston Grand Opera: Socks! - Adamo: Little Women
  12. Rudolf Kempe: Grossmachtige Prinzessin - Ariadne auf Naxos
  13. Leopold Stokowski and the London Symphony Orchestra: Bach: Ein' Feste Burg - Stokowsky Conducts Bach
  14. The Dartington Piano Trio: Clara Schumann: Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 17, Allegro - Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann Piano Trios
  15. Michel Legrand: 2nd mvt Sonatine Bureaucratique, 3éme Gymnopedie, and Caresse - Erik Satie
  16. Coeur des Moines de L'Abbaye Saint-Benoit-Du-Lac: Orgue: Verset Sur L'Hymne "Iste Confessor" etc. - Chant grégorien: Messe de Saint Martin
  17. Ruth Ziesak: Mignon (Kennst du das Land), D321 - Schubert: Goethe Lieder, vol. 2
  18. Der Hamburger Sinfonien: Symphony No. 1 in D - C.P.E. Bach: English Chamber Orchestra
  19. L.A. Philharmonic: IV. Von der Schönheit - Mahler: Das Lied Von Der Erde
  20. Kiri Te Kanawa, Anne Sophie von Otter, Barbara Hendricks: Ist ein Traum, kann nicht wirklich sein... - Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier
  21. Palatinate Philharmonic Orchestra: Kyrie - Beethoven: Missa Solemnis
  22. Houston Grand Opera: Kennst du das Land and Do you know the land? - Adamo: Little Women
  23. Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera: La Forza del Destino Overture - Verdi: Ballet Music and Overtures
  24. The Tallis Scholars: Sancte Deus - Tallis: Spem in alium
  25. Otto Klemperer: Overture to 'The Abduction from the Seraglio' - Mozart Overtures
  26. Pro Cantione Antiqua: Dufay: Motetten - Motetten
  27. NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Toscanini: Poncielli: La Gioconda: Act III; Dance of the Hours - Toscanini Plays Your Favorites
  28. Jeanne Lamon: Vivaldi: Sinfonia for strings in G major - Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Avison
Fortuna:
  1. Rainer Maria Rilke: Someday I will read something other than Rainer Maria Rilke, but this was a request from one of my favorite listeners, and I'm so glad that I stuck with it. Later in the night I had an older German man call in--I think he said he was a professor in the German department here at the university--and said that he was brushing his teeth and absolutely loved hearing the poetry I read so early in the morning!
  2. Der Rosenkavalier: This is a great recording of the final scene/trio, with three really amazing singers. I'm so happy to be able to play it for you, and I highly suggest that you look up the opera to watch sometime.
  3. Nutcracker Suite: I love this. I don't care if you've heard it a million times this holiday season. I'm not sorry I played it again.
Non Fortuna:
  1. Too much Little Women: Ugggh sorry about that. I really didn't realize I had played so much Little Women until I got to the last Little Women track I played. I will be more conscientious of that in the future.
  2. Silence between tracks: Right at the beginning I played Handel's Royal Fireworks, but it was on a CD, and the space between tracks was just too much. In the future I will check how much space is in between tracks, or try to cover it up with some layering.
  3. Checking sets of tracks: So apparently on some classical CDs, they will list a piece, and then something like "1-3" which I have now learned means "tracks 1-3 are this piece." But before I realized that, I played the 2nd movement of Sonatine Bureaucratique.
  4. EDIT: Facebook sounds! It's no secret to my friends that I will chat on Facebook about what I'm playing, and take requests the same way, but this time I forgot to close Facebook before I played a song off of the computer! Oops.
Thanks for listening to my all classical show, and I hope that you get to hear another classical show in the future!

Happy New Year! - Freestailo #17 - 1/1/12

HAPPY NEW YEAR FREESTAILERS!

Click on this picture. It moves.
This is the beginning of a long night for me, and I had a lot of fun spending the beginning of the New Year with you. Like I said over and over again on the show: I can't think of a better way to spend my year than doing the radio thing, and playing music for all of you. They say that what you do on New Year's is what you'll do the rest of the year, and I hope that's true, because that means that I'll be spending a lot more time with you via the airwaves.

Another great way to spend New Year's is with friends, and I'm lucky enough that one of my roommates and one of my good friends came to the station with me to help me pick out music and stay with me a bit. I also was welcomed by three other DJs in the studio when I arrived to the station after my friend's New Year's party. Thus the Beatles song I played first.

Another thing: I dressed up for y'all. Do you realize that? I was decked OUT, kids. Dress, heels, make-up...the works. Came straight from a New Year's party to DJ for you. Because I love you.

At The Party:
  1. Regina Spektor: It's always a pleasure playing Regina Spektor, but I try to restrain myself so that I don't overplay her. 'Bobbing for Apples' is the perfect New Year's song, in my opinion. I don't know why.
  2. Interludes: I like that I used smaller interludes at various times. Wow, that's kind of vague. Specifically, I like the "Moon's Destruction," "Evolution," and Bioshock interludes that I used. I think it added a bit of momentum to the show, and kept me entertained.
  3. Marathon Time: This is part one of my New Year's Marathon, and I think it's pretty good for a long night, right?
Not At The Party:
  1. Skins Mess: Wow, so I really didn't mean to play the beginning of the episode of Skins. I meant to find the perfect scene right in the middle to play for you to make a beautiful layering experience. For some reason though, it didn't register with me that when I started to play Skins, Irony of Fate would stop playing. Derp de derp.
  2. Transitions: Just a bit off I think. Nothing horrible, but not perfect.
  3. Just a bit off...: I can't explain it, but I feel like I just wasn't TOTALLY on my game. I made little flub ups that aren't really worth listing here.
Stay tuned for part two of my New Year's Marathon Extravaganza AKA Heidi DJs for 6-straight-hours yaaaaay!

Radiozilla #1 - 12/11/11

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Radiozilla #1 Here

I recently got drafted into the Radiozilla rotation list, guys. Radiozilla is WCBN's all Japanese music show. Does that seem oddly specific? Maybe it is, but I really don't care, because I could play this stuff all day.

There's not much else to say except that I had a fantastic time searching through the WCBN library for the Japanese stuff. There was a list of Japanese musicians that I was e-mailed beforehand so that I wasn't so overwhelmed (which is really a life-saver), but throughout my search I also found a lot of other names that weren't on the list, so I'm really excited to do another Radiozilla show!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Gontiti: Coconut Basket - Sunday Market
  2. Takako Minekawa: Fantastic Cat - Roomic Cube
  3. Polysics: E.L.T.C.C.T. - Absolute Polysics

  14. Akiko Yano: Angler's Summer - Love Life
  15. unknown: (track #8) - Tenchi Muyo Christmas
Fantastic Cats:
  1. Polysics: I love all things by Polysics. They were one of the first Japanese bands I ever listened to.
  2. Yoko Kanno: Always a pleasure, m'dear. I'm so obsessed with you.
  3. Tenchi Muyo Christmas: I used to watch Tenchi Muyo alllll the time when I was a kid. It was one of my first animes actually, and I would sometimes watch it with friends who had taped it off of Cartoon Network so I wouldn't miss it. Haha!
Not so fantastic cats:
  1. Nothing: This was perfect. Practically. Also, it was just too short to mess up.

Subshow #9 - 12/3/11

Did you know that pretty much every show I pick something from the hip-hop section? I try really hard to have an immense amount of eclecticism in my sets, and I think that it usually pays off. That said, there are certain sections that I still don't have a good feel for because I only pick one or two things from the section. Hip-hop/rap is one of them. That's why when I saw that Chill Will was going to be gone for his show, I snagged it.

WCBN has a surprising amount of hip-hop, and guys: it's really good. Tons of vinyls with a lot of great sampling opportunities for freeform. I had no idea. And I don't think I really knew how hip-hop albums worked either. With rock/soul/folk/whatever you get lots of tracks on one side, and lots of tracks on another. All different. But with hip-hop the vinyl is one track, and there are like 4 different versions of that track on one side, and 4 different versions of a different track on the other. This is how you get radio versions, album versions, instrumental versions, etc. All perfect for my freeform-beating heart.

I talked to a friend Kim from home (who's also a fan of my freeform show), and he gave me some great suggestions, some of which I played: Brother Ali, Flying Lotus, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, and Eyedea+Abilities. I'm really happy with his suggestions, and the request I got of the Triforce of Js: Jurassic 5, J Dilla, Jedi Mind Tricks. I'm learning so much, guys!

Let's do this thing, shall we?

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Helis: Popular Thug (Radio Mix) - Popular Thug
  2. Akrobatik: Remind My Soul (clean) - Remind My Soul
  3. Talib Kweli: Joy feat. Mos Def - Quality
  4. Lupe Fiasco: I Gotcha (radio edit) - I Gotcha
  5. De La Sol: U Can Do (Life) - ///Aoi
  6. Aesop Rock: The Greatest Pac-Man Victory in History - Bazooka Tooth
  7. Kid Koala: slew test 2/mosquito vs. water buffalo/slew test 3 - Your Mom's Favorite DJ
  8. Brother Ali: Star Quality - Shadows On The Sun
  9. G&D: War Drums - The Message
  10. Flatlinerz: Satanic Verses (radio edit) - Satanic Verses
  11. Danger Mouse: Take Care of Business - Take Care of Business
  12. Flying Lotus: Golden Diva - Los Angeles
  13. Saul Williams: Coded Language - Amethyst Rock Star
  14. Jurassic 5: W.O.E. Is Me (World of Entertainment) - W.O.E. Is Me
  15. J Dilla: (track #26) - Dilla Doughnuts
  16. Jedi Mind Tricks: Heavy Metal Kings feat. Ill Bill - Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell
  17. Dream Warriors: Voyage Through The Multiverse - And Now The Legacy Begins
  18. Gusto: Materialistic Girl (dub) - Materialistic Girl
  19. Dove Shack: Summertime In The LBC (LP Version) - Summertime In The LBC
  20. 44 Max: Pussh + Shove (Max Mix) - Pussh + Shove
  21. Toshi Kubota: (All Star Street Funk Mix) - Funk It Up
  22. The Black Keys with Mos Def: On The Vista - Blackroc
  23. Atmosphere: Panic Attack - The Fun EP
  24. Black Czer: Who Got The Glock (album version) - Who Got The Glock/Stick Up
  25. Cannibal Ox: Pidgeon - The Cold Vein
  26. Psyche Origami: Wherever You Are - The Standard
  27. Wiley: Boom Boom Da Na - 100% Publishing
  28. Sage Francis: Broken Wings - Personal Journals
  29. Madvillain: Accordian - Madvillain
  30. Cypress Hill: Make A Move - Temples of Doom
  31. Mathambo: Mshini Wam - Mshini Wam
  32. Raashan Ahmad: Heavenbound - The Push
  33. Eyedea + Abilities: Paradise - E&A
  34. Dark Sun Riders: Zoneweilders Groove - Seeds of Evolution
  35. Material (Extrakd/Eddie Def): Who Wake the Rooster? - Intonarumori
  36. Hami: Keep On Usin' Me (I Must Like It) - The Funky Descendant
  37. Cee Lo Green: Brighter Lights, Bigger City - The Lady Killer
  38. Deltron 3030: Turbulence remix by Mark Bell (Depeche Mode) - Positive Contact
  39. Ladae!: Ghetto Flava - Party 2 Nite
U Can Do:
  1. Triple J Request: These three were great artists to put together, and I'm happy with the songs that I picked. I can't wait to play more of their stuff on my freeform show.
  2. Cannibal Ox: I had no idea what this was, but I really like it. This and a few other albums really pushed my perceptions of hip-hop into something that I can understand. It's really like any other genre with lots of sub-genres attached to it, and Cannibal Ox kind of sounds like a nerdier, grittier hip-hop. Like the metal of rock.
  3. Cee Lo Green: This was a request by a friend, and I was kind of astounded at how good it was. It was perfect for the near end of my set, so thanks!
U Can't Do:
  1. Umm...: Not that it was "the perfect show" or anything, but I really can't think of much I disliked about it. I don't know enough about hip-hop to really think I've done anything wrong.
  2. Oh I know!: I really didn't do anything risky on this show. Like, at all. I pretty much played from track to track, and that was it. I'm glad that I did, because I just don't know how I would have layered all hip-hop music, and I have a better sense of the library now, but that's something I would like to be better at in the future.
Feedback, guys. I want it.

"What It Is" #1 - 10/7/11

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Soul Show #1 Here

What's up, funk muffins?

Guess who has two thumbs and did her first specialty show! This guy! Although DJing a soul show is not something that everyone does on their Friday night, I am convinced that it is the best way to spend a Friday night. I had a blast rifling through the CDs and records, and I've never gotten so many calls in one show. I also had the opportunity to dance and belt to soul all by myself in the studio.

While I was DJing I also talked to Manos (who DJ's Short Stack), and he said that he didn't know the soul CD collection very well, but he knows most of the soul stuff before 1980, whereas I've gotten to know a lot of the neo-soul, like The Budos Band, Bullfrog, Soul Investigators, what-have-you. I ended up showing him the Ike and Tina Turner Revue CD (which I play almost constantly), and he said that the Kent Records label (an offshoot of Ace Records) does a lot of Northern Soul music, which I've been trying to get at after watching the second episode of Skins US where Tea dances to some Northern Soul and it's just about the cutest thing ever. Here's a clip explaining a bit about Northern Soul music, and the style of dancing that goes along with it.

I also realized throughout the night that Daptone Records are the ones that put out a lot of the warm, buttery soul goodness that went into this show. I can't wait to get to know more of these labels so that I can have more assurance when I pull something off the shelves. As I've been doing my freeform show, I sometimes lean towards the soul section for some familiarity, so doing an entire show of soul music made me realize that I know the soul section pretty well now, and was able to call on a lot of favorites to play for you.

Yo-Heidi-Loves-Ya':
  1. Transitions in General: I don't know why, but for some reason all of my transitions were just ACE. It was so easy to feel the flow of how the songs went in and out, and it was easy to feel what to transition to as well.
  2. Opening: I was talking to Manos as I was grabbing some records, and I knew in my heart that I needed to play Earth Wind and Fire for my first number. Right when I put it on, Manos was like, "That was a great way to open." I think it set up my groove for the entire set really well, and it kept me on my game.
  3. Requests!: Very rarely will I get so many requests, but I had a lot of people listening, and a lot of people really enjoying the show. It was a great boost for my ego, and I think it really fueled the rest of the show as well. One guy called in for "Dance With Me" by Rick James, and some cats from the People's Food Co-op called in for "Bop Gun" by Parliament. Sometimes requests can throw off your groove, but when the listeners clearly love soul this much to request something specific, I have total confidence in them.
What's Heidi Doin'?
  1. Forgetting how long my own show was: Um, wow guys. As I'm sure you'll notice when you listen, I forgot that my show was 2 hours instead of 1 hour. -_- Absolutely dumb mistake on my part. It didn't really affect my set, except that I had to play an extra long radio ID to find music. In some ways I think it helped, because thinking that my show was only an hour really kept me busy, and looking for ways to create a lot of variety.
  2. Choosing a 5-min radio ID: I didn't didn't need 5 minutes to find a couple more soul CDs, and I think it broke up the set a bit weirdly. Note to self: just don't play 5-min IDs.
  3. Last track ending: The last track I played was a single track, but on a full-size LP, which absolutely boggles my mind. I thought it would play for a good 10 minutes so that James would have time to load up some songs, but it ran out before the hour. Sorry James!
Bon appetit!
