Freestailo #30 - 4/11/12

"I didn't know radio could sound like that!"
I had a couple of awesome guests on my show today: DJ Non-James, and my new friend Emily, who were lazing around the station around the time that I got locked out of my apartment and decided to come to the station early. Good thing I did, too, because they gave me a lot of inspiration for my show. It all started when James basically told me he was sabotaging my show. I didn't really know what that meant, but apparently it meant playing multiple vinyls of the same song at slightly different beats, and sometimes playing them backwards by propping them up with shot-glasses and ingenuity.

"Why now?" you might ask. When I was talking with Emily and James, he quoted Manager Ben (who was quoting me), and said, "We should start slapping our listeners in the face with WCBN!" So, we decided do try some crazy things. That's what freeform's about: experimenting. We can do anything at WCBN, and we should take advantage of it way more often. I could theoretically be using 3 vinyl, 3 CDs, 2 computers, 1 VHS, 1 DVD, 1 cassette, and 4 microphones worth of audio. And possible more that I don't know about. To me, that is absolute freedom. The only major rule is that you can't say curse words on air.

This is where I want to hear what you think, listeners. What kind of experimentation would you like to hear? What have been your favorite moments of my show?

  15. Featuring Supercat, Jr. Cat, NIcodemus, Jr. Demus: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Crazy - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Crazy
  16. Ruth Wallis: Boobs - Boobs

  19. The Ukranians: Europa - Kultura
  20. Bayette: Thabo - Mmalo-We
  21. Andreas Vollendender: Caverna Magica - Caverna Magica
  22. Bobby Darin: Dream Lover - Darin at the Copa
  23. Radiohead: Lull - Lost Treasures

  25. Phillip Glass: Freezing (x2) - Songs From Liquid Days
  26. Brook Benton: The Nearness of You - It's Just A Matter Of Time
  27. The Nighthawks: Sugar Mama - The Nighthawks
  28. The Free Design: An Elegy - Kid Koala & Dynomite D.
  29. Simone Dinnerstein: Aria - Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988
The Good/Crazy:
  1. Radiohead "Lost Treasures": I like to think I'm a Radiohead fan, and I couldn't believe there was an album I hadn't heard of, or that it was so good.
  2. Boobs: Ruth Wallis is a genius. I'm going to play this entire album on the show someday, because every track was pure WCBN gold. Thanks for the tip, Rev. Andrew!
  3. Phillip Glass x2: At this point in the show, James propped a record on a shot class, turned the needle upside down, and played the record backwards, and did the same to another record, but just an 8th-note or so off. It reminded me of when I played 3 different recordings of "Tuba miram" from Mozart's Requiem back to back.
The Bad/Ugly:
  1. Dead air: I know there was a moment of dead air. I don't know what happened, but the Macbook I was playing off of just kind of stopped in its tracks in the middle of the first Radiohead song. I pretended like I was playing 4'33" by John Cage. That was a lie.
  2. Quentin Tarantino Interview: That was a bit of a let-down. I was expecting some layering of the song with the interview, and what I got was 20-seconds of Tarantino, and then the song. Disappointing.
  3. Lackluster ending: I left the rest of it to James before the next DJ came, but my ending was a bit...eh...boring I guess. Not that classical music is boring, but I like to end with a bang.
Finally done with back-updates! Tune in next week!

Freestailo #25 - 2/29/12 - Video Game Special!

Itsa me! Freestailooooooo!

How I imagined my listeners during this show
This was a very special show for me, and something I've been thinking about doing for awhile. I've had moments in my show when I play video game music, such as the Super Mario RPG segment, and the Pokemon segment, but I've been telling myself that a show entirely made of video game music would be the best show ever. And I was right.

How I imagined myself during this show
The best thing by far about this show was that I've never gotten so many calls/messages into the station during one set in my life. I can't tell you how excited I was. Reverend Andrew was e-mailing me and IMing me with videos like this that I unfortunately didn't get to play, I got numerous requests besides those, including The Minibosses, Counter Cosby, Final Fantasy VIII, and Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball. This is what I live for, so thanks for fueling my fire. The highlight of this is when I got a call from a gamer who was SO EXCITED that I knew what the Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon game was, and that I played a song from it.

I would also love to hear your thoughts about games that I should have played from but didn't. The ones that immediately came to mind were: World of Warcraft, Donkey Kong, (more) Star Fox, and Sonic the Hedgehog. I realized after scouring the station for video game soundtracks, that we have only TWO: Super Mario 64, and Final Fantasy X. That's kind of tragic guys. I want to fix that so that all you can have the possibility of quality video game music over the airwaves at all times. And by the way listeners: what WOULD you want to have in the station? Shoot me some suggestions and I will do my best to get them in the station.

How I actually was during this show
Something I also wanted to mention is how good it felt to talk on the radio again. Perhaps I've been getting lazy or insecure about talking on the radio lately, but with this I had no problems. I still need to work on the flow of speech, but that's something that will come with more practice, methinks. Another question for you though: what kind of things would you want me to talk about? Would you want me to tell you stories? More video game nostalgia? Poetry?

A little thing I want to say to Nintendo: Thank you for existing. Without you, I would have had a much shittier childhood, and I definitely wouldn't be the person I am today.

Now. On to this epic playlist Why not curl up with your old brick Gameboy and take a listen?

EDIT: Also, I got a message from a friend giving me a correction to a comment I made on "Luigi's Mansion." It was NOT the first game Luigi starred in, because that honor goes to "Mario Is Missing" for the SNES, which I played as a kid and completely forgot about, so shame on me.

1-Ups:
  1. So many requests!: I can say with no exaggeration that I got more calls for comments and requests during this show than any other show I've done. It really motivated me to keep going, and gave me inspiration to pick from new games.
  2. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon: This is one of my absolutely favorite games in the world, and after I played the intro theme to it, I got a call from a guy who was so excited that someone else had even PLAYED this game.
  3. Mix of games: Although I definitely could have branched out to other games, I feel very satisfied with the variety of games that I used.
Poison Mushrooms:
  1. DJ not showing up: This wouldn't have affected too much of my set, but truthfully, I was done DJing after I played the last Animal Crossing track. The others were to fill time, although I still enjoyed playing them for you.
  2. Transitions in general: As I was trying to adjust to the reality of only being able to use CDs, my laptop, and the studio computer, I realized I had dramatically gone from 9 modes of play, to 3. This meant that I had to balance what I played from medium to medium, which is harder than it sounds. At first I set my iTunes to fade into the next song automatically, but I realized with the Katamari Damacy track that was a very bad idea. Although I eventually got more used to how to transition between only 3 mediums (and largely 2), there were still a few wonky moments. I think most of what I had to learn was that I needed a bit quicker hand, and precise timing.
  3. HAWP: Although I love the Burchs, I should have picked a less visual, and more aural video, because, although I was thoroughly entertained by the thought of Ashly Burch eating puppies and peptobismal, you couldn't see any of it. This is why sometimes I wish radio had video...but not television. That's a topic for another day.
  4. Less ummmmms: Although I'm happy with the amount of talking I did throughout the show, upon listening I was a little annoyed with the amount of "um"s and "uh"s I heard, so I'm sure you were annoyed as well. I will work on that and try to speak in complete sentences.
Give me comments! I want your feedback! And if you want to know where I got any of the music you heard today, just drop me a line and I'll point you in the right direction.

Surprise Radiozilla #3 - 2/26/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Radiozilla #3 Here

Minekawa-san with a cat
Konnichiwa, minna-san! Today's Radiozilla is brought to you by...*drumroll*...a surprise no-show DJ after the Latin show! Luckily, I really like Radiozilla, and I really like WCBN, and I'm on spring break, so I was happy to stay.

Miyavi-san with a cat
Honestly, I didn't feel great about this show, purely because I wasn't prepared to actually DJ this show. I usually come to the station about 15-30 minutes before I do a show so that I can pick out music, and accumulate a nice pile of CDs/LPs so that I don't have to run around the station a lot. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I was doing this time. For a freeform show it's pretty easy to operate like that, because I have the freedom to literally grab whatever I want. But with an all-Japanese show, I must grab Japanese music. Here's the trick: there's no Japanese section. I need to literally scan all of the sections to find Japanese artists, or go from the Japanese artists that I know. I had a little bit of help from a special guest in the station, but I still felt a bit stressed. I hope that didn't come across.

Although this show isn't cat themed, I hope you like these pictures of two amazing artists which you will hear in this set with some cats (fake and real ones), and this other picture of a cat meme!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Kodó: Strobe's Nanafushi (Satori Mix) - Sai-So
  2. Miyavi: Are You Ready To Love? - Miyaviuta (Dokuso)
  3. Takako Minekawa: Sleep Song (Remixed by portastic) - Recubed EP
  4. Cibo Matto: Working For Vacation - Stereo Type A
  5. Puffy: Circuit No Musume - Japan Not For Sale vol. 2
  6. Sachiko: Tokyo Song - Fork in the Road/Tokyo Song
  7. Kahimi Karie: Lolitapop Dollhouse - Kahimi Karie
  8. Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O - Pink Lady Lemonade (I Want To Drink You) - Live in Occident
  9. Cornelius: The Micro Disneycal World Tour - Fantasma
  10. Tujiko Noriko: Kiminotameni - From Tokyo To Naiagara
  11. Supercar: White Surf style 5. - Japan For Sale
  12. Yoko Kanno: Pokketto O Karani - Escaflowne Over the Sky
  13. High Rise: Mainliner - Live
DJs who show up for their shows:
  1. Last-minute sub award: 'nuff said.
  2. High Rise: Always a pleasure. I always try to keep them in the back of my mind during Radiozilla, because we have like 5 albums of their stuff.
DJs who forget their shows and don't apologize:
  1. Sub-par picks: Apart from the tracks that my special guest picked out, I felt like my own tracks were a bit below the bar that I aim for Radiozilla. I like upbeat tracks contrasted with pretty acoustic tracks, but it felt really all over the place today.
Sorry, not much to say for such a short show. Still hope you enjoy it!

Latin Show #1 - 2/26/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download Latin Show #1 Here

Hola, amigos! I subbed the Latin show today!

I've been wanting to get on this show for a long time, but it just never happened. This is exactly why: it was third on my preferences for specialty shows. Now, I know what you're thinking, "Well, Heidi. You can't really expect to be on the Latin show if it's your THIRD preference." But here's the thing, my other specialty shows I rotate are "What It Is" and "Radiozilla," which I both really enjoy. I simply HAD to put a third preference. Really, in a perfect world, I would be on ALL the specialty shows. Also, incidentally, it was my half-birthday this day. So happy half-birthday to me.

Astor Piazzolla: Si, feliz cumpleaños, Heidi.
That aside, I had a lot of fun DJing this set, and hopefully it'll give you a little something to dance to while you do dishes, which is what I'm going to do.

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Bio Ritmo: Muchacho - Biónico
  2. Grupo Exploracion: Congo Timba - Drum Jam
  3. Gotan Project: Arrabal - Lunático
  4. Astor Piazzolla: Butcher's Death - The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night
  5. Tito Puente: El Timbalon - Un Poco Loco
  6. Roberto Poveda: Libertad - Son Electrico
  7. Los Van Van: Recaditos No - Songo
  8. Nova Lima: Libertá - Coba Coba
  9. Michel Portal & Richard Galliano: Libertango - Concerts
  10. Urubamba: Heart of the Inca King - Urubamba
  11. Claudia Gomez: Mi Gustaría Cantar - Tierradentro
  12. Grupo Fantasma: Calor - El Existential
  13. Los Calchakis: La Rosa Y La Espina - Indian Flutes, Harps and Guitars
  14. Tonino Caratone: Amar y Vivar - Latin Alternative Music Conference 2001
  15. Adalberto Alvarez & María José Santiago: La Primavera - Flamenco Son
  16. Sukay: Carneval Del Colibrí - Tutayay
Me gusta:
  1. Astor Piazzolla: This LP was one of the most interesting things I've seen in a long time. On the cover it had a man licking a woman's armpit while they were dancing, and it was all in red. A lot of these songs had super interesting names too. And the whole thing was really damn good.
  2. Tema de la libertad: I didn't specifically mean to, but I played a lot of songs with some form of "libertad" in the title. I also think it's funny that a lot of Latin music has that as a theme. Anyone know why? I'm really asking.
No me gusta:
  1. Failure to find Spanish promos/PSAs: The first legal ID I played was in Spanish, but after that I completely failed to find them, which was something I really wanted to keep the mood of the show in tact.
  2. Too short: I need more of this in my life.
Thanks for listening! Let me know if you like my version of the Latin show, and if you want to hear me do the Latin show again!

What is up, listeners? I've been jammin' in the studio with some good ol' soul jams.

This show is one that I FORGOT TO POST for all of you, and I am SO SORRY. I posted the 6 O'Clock Shadow hour that I did that day, but not this one. Some exciting things happened on this episode of What It Is, including having a special guest, my very good friend Sarah, in the studio taking some documentary photography while I did my thang.

I really have nothing else to say, so let's get to it!

  2. The Bar-Kays: Always a good way to start a set. Second only to Bootsy.
Feelin' Bad:
  1. NOTHING IS BAD EVERYTHING GOOD.
Keep listening! Leave comments with suggestions!

6 O' Clock Shadow #2 - 1/20/12

Right Click/Ctrl-Click to Download 6 O'Clock Shadow #2 Here

IT'S 18:00 GUYS!!! Do you know what that means? In American it means 6:00pm, and on a Friday that means that it's 6 O'Clock Shadow time. When you come into the station and pick out music to play on the 88.3 FM airwaves.

Today I actually had a Shadower! His name is Tom, and apparently he's been wanting to come to the 6:00 Shadow for awhile, but just hasn't been able to get there because of work or life or whatever. He picked out songs #10-17. He came in to the studio and was immediately overwhelmed by all of the choices, and especially the local artist section, which is pretty stellar. At the same time Tom was in the studio, Winnie was training a new DJ as well! Anyway, that particular trainee was one that James and I grabbed in the Union at Winterfest, so it was pretty gratifying to see someone that I snagged in the station and making a mix tape! Like a monster that I helped to create!

Freeform! It's alive! It's ALIVE! Mwahahahahaha!
With such a short list there's not much to say, but I hope I've piqued your interest enough to make you want to check out the studio. You are always welcome.

  2. Cockatiel Training Album: This makes my life better knowing that this record exists, and especially that it exists at WCBN. Whoever donated this to the station deserves warm cookies and my undying love.
  3. Tom: Thanks for coming Tom. You made my 6:00 Shadow so much more interesting.
No thank you:
  1. Nothing: Freeform for the win. Good job Tom.

Hey future WCBN lovers.

I had a lot of fun with this week’s show, gang. A friend came into the studio, helped me pick out some music, and kept me company for my shift, so I had a lot of new music that I probably wouldn’t have grabbed myself. It was like having a listener constantly calling in requests, except that my listener had a face, and I didn’t have to actually find the requests! It also helps my perspective and understanding of the station to have a helper.

I had an interesting arch in my set that I’ve never had this time: from records to CDs, to records. Usually I try to have a very even mix between records and CDs (and occasionally my personal library) throughout my show, but I used a lot more records than usual, and when I did use CDs, it was later in the set, right before I started using records again. I didn’t mix and match too much. Seeing how smooth my set was, I’ll have to experiment with whatever it was I did, since there were a few variables to this equation.

Also, shout out to my mom with the Harry Belafonte song. She used to sing this to me all the time, and (even though I played it at 45rpm) it’s fun to find nostalgia in the studio, you know?

  19. The King's Singers: Ecce vidimus eum - Gesualdo: Tenebrae Responsories For Maundy Thursday
  20. Harry Belafonte: Jamaica Farewell - Belafonte '89
  21. Jerry Lee Lewis: Great Balls of Fire - Don't You Step On My Blue Suede Shoes
  22. The Homosexuals: Divorce Proceeding (From Reality) - Astral Glamour
  23. "Big Voice" Odom: Mother-In-Law Blues - Feel So Good

  25. Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson: Winter Song - Winter Song
  26. Cristina Perri: A Thousand Years - Breaking Dawn
  27. Rob Macht: Vishnu - Vishnu

Knockin’ At The Right Door:
  1. Haunted house sounds: I’m pretty happy with the layering that I did so early on! It usually takes me awhile to warm up to sets of layering, but this came very easily to me.
  2. Shaggy Dog Cha Cha Cha: My friend picked this out, and it was a GEM. I’m always looking for new children’s stories and things to play from our library, but sometimes it takes new perspective to find it.
  3. Forcefield: Once again, my friend picked this out. As I was playing it the next DJ came in to get some music and was really digging it.
Knockin’ At The Wrong Door:
  1. The Rollers: I’m pretty sure I played “Knockin’ At The Wrong Door” for one of my other shows, and I really hate playing repeats. I meant to find a different song on this album, but Nikki and the Corvettes ended early, and I panicked.
  2. Accidental 45s: Turntable 1 has a glitch where if you switch it to 45rpm, then you have to first turn it off, and then back on to use it on 33rpm. Me being a derp, I did not check this beforehand, and played most of the records on Turntable 1 at 45rpm. Bach, the Korean music, Harry Belafonte…all but the Matthew Dear record.
  3. Long set is long: Perhaps it was because I had a friend in the studio, but the last hour was…an hour. I didn’t have to play any PSAs or Promos in the middle, so I just kept playing music because I didn’t feel like stopping. In my experience, this creates frustrated listeners.
Now go listen to more radio!

6 O'Clock Shadow #1 - 12/16/11

Hey future CBNers.

Have you ever heard of the "6 O'Clock Shadow" on WCBN? The idea is that for one hour, a friendly DJ (like yours truly), does an hour of freeform and waits for a few guests to come knocking on the station's shady, metal door so that prospective DJs might try picking some music out and get a feel for how it's done. You call. I let you in. You come pick out ANYTHING YOU WANT. I play it. It also gives you a chance to talk to the DJ and ask them ANYTHING YOU WANT.

Today I also had a guest, who is my mother. Who picked out a few of the songs, like Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross. She took a lot of pictures too. Unfortunately for her, I was really busy pretty much the entire hour, and was running around constantly because I ended up playing a bunch of short songs. BUT I think the set came out really well because of it!

[Artist: Song - Album]
  1. Marvin Gaye: Dream Of A Lifetime - Dream Of A Lifetime
  2. Dan Deacon: The House I Was Isn't My Girlfriends Porsche - Silly Hat vs. Egale Hat
  3. Sounds of the Tropical Rain Forest in America
  4. Black Joe Lewis: I'm Gonna Leave You - Scandalous
  5. Randy Grief: Sneezing and Howling - Alice in Wonderland pt. 3
  6. Ella Fitzgerald: Cottontail - Duke Ellington Songbook
  7. Heartbeat of Africa: African Bird Sounds - Heartbeat of Africa
  8. Angela Hewitt: English Suite No. 1 in A major BWV806 - Bach: the English Suites
  9. Metro: A pénz - Well Hung
  10. Fred Houn and the Afro-Asian Music Ensemble - We Refuse to Be Used and Abused
  11. Tuvan singers: It Began With An Echo - Heart of Tuva
  12. Eugene Mirman: Hello My Name Is Trevor - God is a 12-year-old Boy With Asperger's
  13. KMFDM: I Can't Reject This Empty Hole - The Juke-Joint Jezebel: The Giorgio Moroder Mixes
  14. Cee Lo Green: I Want You - YouTube
  15. Diana Ross: Doobedood'ndoobe, Doobedood'ndoobe, Doobedood'ndoo - Everything Is Everything
  16. Wordsound I-Powa: Dungeon of Dub - Axiom Dub - Mysteries of Creation
  17. Anna Oxygen: Scientist - All Your Faded Things
  18. Otis Rush: You Don't Have To Go - Lost in the Blues
I Want You:
  1.  Transition from Houn to Tuvan singers: As I was layering these tracks, I literally could not distinguish the two aurally. I had to simply watch for the first track to end to know which sounds had stopped. These are the moments for why I'm a DJ.
  2.  Marvin Gaye: Thank my mom for this actually. I asked her if she wanted to her anything in particular and she said Marvin Gaye.
I Don't Want You:
  1. Doobedoobedoobedoobedobedoo...: I am not joking when I say this is the longest title to a song that I have ever seen or entered into the playlist, and I hope that I never see anything longer. This was horrible to type in. Maybe I could have stuck with one "Doobedood'ndoobe," but I'm dedicated to you, listeners.
  2. There's not enough to hate about this. Deal with it.
I hope you like it! And if you want to DJ, shoot me an e-mail. I'd be glad to point you in the right direction.

Subshow #10 - 12/17/11

Hey lovers.

I know it took a really long time, and that Christmas has past, and for failing you in that regard, I am truly sorry. The thing is, is that I've been in Istanbul for the past week, and didn't have internet as consistently as I thought I might. But please feel no guilt when you listen to the Christmas songs included on the playlist, because it's my fault, not yours, and you deserve more Christmas music than the year allows.

This episode of "Robot Pasta" turned out to be pretty fun, because I also had a guest with me who is training to become a DJaaaaaay! Cool, right? His name's Cameron, and he chose out a lot of the material you see before you. I won't tell you what, so you'll just have to listen.

Also, you will notice a handful of dub-step artists on the playlist, so for those that asked for it, you're welcome. Now that I know that there's a need for dub-step, I'll keep searching it out in the library.

--. --- --- -..
  1.  Morse code: This was definitely the highlight for me. I was practically doing backflips when I saw that we had a morse code sound effect LP, and started playing it immediately. I actually had a listener call in and ask if there was something wrong with our system, or whether it was intentional.
  2. Duke's Nutcracker Suite: Mmm this was absolutely delicious for my ears. I'm sad that it has to go back into the reaches of the Christmas collection, otherwise I would play it all the time.
  3. Dexter's Lab: Do you remember this show?! Because Cameron and I did. I even remember this will.i.am song. And the music video. I miss Cartoon Network. I miss having cable...anyway. This is genius and I was literally screaming in the studio while it was playing.
-... .- -..
  1. Osborne meets Little Red: I'm really unsure about this. I had a very uncomfortable feeling the whole time this was playing. How did it make you feel?
  2. F*** up: Yup, I think I played an FCC. And by "I think," i mean that I definitely played an FCC. I tried to correct it as quickly as I could after I heard it, but that's hard sometimes.
I usually try to have three things for each category, good and bad, but I thought this was a pretty good show besides those few things I mentioned. C'est la vie. Keep listening folks! Give me comments if you can!
